Wall shear stress gradient is independently associated with middle cerebral artery aneurysm development: a case-control CFD patient-specific study based on 77 patients

Mikolaj Zimny et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the combination of high wall shear stress (WSS) and positive wall shear stress gradient (WSSG) in intracranial aneurysm formation. Positive WSSG was identified as a significant independent prognosticator for aneurysm formation, with logistic regression showing it as a co-predictor along with WSS. A higher proportion of patients in the case group had regions of high WSS combined with positive WSSG near the bifurcation apex, indicating the influence of these hemodynamic factors on aneurysm development.
