Serotyping of sub-Saharan Africa Salmonella strains isolated from poultry feces using multiplex PCR and whole genome sequencing

Asseta Kagambega et al.

Summary: The study compared two methods, SMART PCR and SeqSero 2.0, for determining Salmonella serotypes from poultry feces in Burkina Faso. It was found that SeqSero 2.0 was more comprehensive and successfully identified serotypes for 105 out of 111 isolates, compared to only 17 identified by SMART PCR.

Stepwise evolution of Salmonella Typhimurium ST313 causing bloodstream infection in Africa

Caisey V. Pulford et al.

Summary: This study identified a new lineage of nontyphoidal Salmonella, ST313 L3, which emerged in Malawi in 2016 and is closely related to variants causing gastrointestinal disease in the United Kingdom and Brazil. Genomic analysis revealed degradation events in important virulence genes in ST313 L3, a phenomenon not seen in other ST313 lineages.

Diversity and antimicrobial drug resistance of non-typhoid Salmonella serotypes isolated in lettuce, irrigation water and clinical samples in Burkina Faso

Namwin Siourime Somda et al.

Summary: This study identified a variety of non-typhoidal Salmonella serotypes and resistance genes in lettuce, irrigation water, and human samples. Some strains showed antibiotic resistance, posing a risk for transmission to humans. Efforts to prevent infection should include microbiological and antimicrobial resistance plans.
