Andre Felipe da Silva et al.

Summary: This review discusses the production of fungal biosurfactants and their application in industry and the environment. It presents the thermodynamic and physico-chemical properties of biosurfactants for detailed analysis of their structure and application. Promising niches for isolating biosurfactant-producing fungi are highlighted, and screening methodologies are discussed.

Diversity and Oil Degradation Potential of Culturable Microbes Isolated from Chronically Contaminated Soils in Trinidad

Amanda C. Ramdass et al.

Summary: Trinidad and Tobago is the largest producer of oil and natural gas in Central America and the Caribbean. This study isolated diverse microbial communities from soils chronically contaminated with crude oil, including novel oil-degrading fungi and yeast, as well as specific bacterial species not previously reported. Enhanced biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons is maintained by biocatalysts such as lipases, which were found to be active in vitro in five out of seven species.

Summary: By combining acyltransferase genes involved in MEL production from different fungal species, altered MEL variants with distinct properties and antimicrobial activity can be obtained. The study also demonstrates that a U. maydis paralog of the acyltransferase gene with different substrate specificity can be used for the biosynthesis of modified MEL variants.
