Exploring the actionability of healthcare performance indicators for quality of care: a qualitative analysis of the literature, expert opinion and user experience

Erica Barbazza et al.

Summary: The study explored the meaning of actionable healthcare performance indicators for quality of care-related decisions by analyzing the constructs of fitness for purpose and fitness for use. Common uses of healthcare performance indicators were differentiated within micro-meso-macro contexts of healthcare systems, with each purpose of use signaling different decision-making tasks and information needs. An indicator's fitness for use can be appraised by three clusters of considerations: methodological, contextual, and managerial.

Quality improvement in chronic care by self-audit, benchmarking and networking in general practices in South Tyrol, Italy: results from an interventional study

Giuliano Piccoliori et al.

Summary: This interventional study in Italy assessed the effectiveness of a combined intervention (self-audit, benchmarking, quality circles) on improving quality of care in general practice. Results showed significant improvements in performance, particularly in the process and intermediate outcome indicators between baseline and the first follow-up. The study suggests that a limited set of quality indicators and regular modification may be advisable for increased benefits and future quality programmes.
