New Method for Identifying Fungal Kingdom Enzyme Hotspots from Genome Sequences

Lene Lange et al.

Summary: Fungal genome sequencing data can be utilized for enzyme discovery. A new approach using integrated function-family annotation of CAZymes has been developed to identify and quantify biomass-degrading capacity and diversity in fungal genomes. This analysis has identified potent hotspots of fungal biomass processing CAZymes, revealing insights into the evolution of fungal substrate-digestive profiles and expanding knowledge on biomass resource utilization.

An overview of Trichoderma reesei co-cultures for the production of lignocellulolytic enzymes

Guilherme Bento Sperandio et al.

Summary: Biorefineries are essential for a sustainable circular bioeconomy, utilizing microbial enzymes to hydrolyze lignocellulosic substrates. Fungal co-cultures have shown enhanced enzyme activities, especially in beta-glucosidase, with Trichoderma reesei being a prominent candidate for future investigations. Further research is needed to explore molecular interactions and optimize enzyme cocktails in controlled environments before industrial application.

Anaerobic gut fungi are an untapped reservoir of natural products

Candice L. Swift et al.

Summary: Anaerobic gut fungi, as low-abundance members of the herbivore digestive tract, have been found to potentially synthesize diverse natural products, including antibiotics and antimicrobial peptides. Through a multi-omics approach, genes encoding biosynthetic enzymes for natural products were identified in four representative anaerobic gut fungal species. This suggests that these fungi could serve as a valuable source of antimicrobials and therapeutics.

The Anaerobic Fungi: Challenges and Opportunities for Industrial Lignocellulosic Biofuel Production

Luke M. G. Saye et al.

Summary: Lignocellulose is a promising feedstock for biofuel production, but pretreatments are needed to overcome its natural recalcitrance. Anaerobic fungi have potential for biofuel production due to their effective ability to hydrolyse lignocellulose and convert it to H-2 and ethanol, as well as produce volatile fatty acid precursors for further conversion.

Secretome characterization of the lignocellulose-degrading fungi Pycnoporus sanguineus and Ganoderma resinaceum growing on Panicum prionitis biomass

Albertina Gauna et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficiency of pretreatment using secretome from Pycnoporus and Ganoderma species in a glucose-free inductive medium with C4 grass, revealing that P. sanguineus showed higher lignocellulolytic enzyme activity. The research also suggests that a beta-glucosidase isoform from P. sanguineus may be glucose tolerant. The proteomic approach identified different proteins in the secretomes of G. resinaceum and P. sanguineus, leading to new avenues for understanding lignocellulosic biomass degradation mechanisms.
