Bridging the gap to hydrochar production and its application into frameworks of bioenergy, environmental and biocatalysis areas

Angel Fernandez-Sanroman et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a facile, low-cost and eco-friendly thermal conversion process that has gained increasing attention, but operational barriers, complex reaction mechanisms, and scaling issues need to be addressed for commercialization. This review elaborates on the chemistry of lignocellulosic biomass conversion and discusses the influence of HTC operational conditions on the production of hydrochar with desired properties.

Valorization of anaerobic digestion digestate: A prospect review

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is seen as a promising technology for bioenergy production, generating digestate as residual waste. The digestate contains both organic and inorganic matters, which can be considered as risky contaminants if not properly treated, but can also be valuable resources if recovered adequately. This review examines current research efforts on digestate valorization, focusing on resource recovery and potential applications, including conversion techniques and economic feasibility. The prospects for digestate valorization are optimistic.

A review on the valorisation of food waste as a nutrient source and soil amendment

James O'Connor et al.

Summary: Valorisation of food waste offers an economic and environmental opportunity to reduce conventional disposal problems. Food waste can be converted into various products such as biofertilisers, bioplastics, biofuels, chemicals, and nutraceuticals, reducing the reliance on fossil-derived products and their associated pollution. This valorisation can help combat land degradation in agricultural areas and improve soil productivity while also assisting in the remediation of contaminated soils.

Long-term characterization and resource potential evaluation of the digestate from food waste anaerobic digestion plants

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the long-term characteristics of digestate from food waste (DFW) from an industrial-scale AD plant in China for 16 months, and found that DFW contains abundant organic matter and nutrients. Pyrolysis and composting were evaluated as optional conversion ways of DFW, with pyrolysis recommended for biochar production and composting offering the best potential for nutrient recovery.

Relative Weight of Organic Waste Origin on Compost and Digestate 16S rRNA Gene Bacterial Profilings and Related Functional Inferences

Axel Aigle et al.

Summary: The study found that the origin of organic waste had a significant impact on the bacterial contents of end products during anaerobic digestion and composting. Composting led to a convergence in bacterial structures, while anaerobic digestion showed differences in bacterial communities based on the origin of the waste. Functional traits selected by physicochemical factors drove the changes in bacterial communities during AD and composting processes.

Biochar utilisation in the anaerobic digestion of food waste for the creation of a circular economy via biogas upgrading and digestate treatment

Jonathan T. E. Lee et al.

Summary: The study investigated the application of wood waste-derived biochar in food-waste anaerobic digestion to create a circular economy. Results showed that biochar could be used to upgrade biogas, remove pollutants from digestate wastewater, and recover nutrients as a biofertilizer for vegetable cultivation.

A review on nitrogen dynamics and mitigation strategies of food waste digestate composting

M. K. Manu et al.

Summary: The production, characteristics, and composting of food waste digestate are discussed in this review, along with an evaluation of nitrogen dynamics cycle considering high ammonium nitrogen content. Mitigation strategies for reducing nitrogen loss through C/N ratio adjustment and the addition of physical, chemical, and microbial amendments are also evaluated and estimated for 15 countries based on available data.

Effect of residence time during hydrothermal carbonization of biogas digestate on the combustion characteristics of hydrochar and the biogas production of process water

Zebin Cao et al.

Summary: The study shows that HTC treatment of biogas digestate can improve the slagging and fouling indices of hydrochar, with the specific methane yield of process water minimally affected by varying HTC residence time. Energy assessment reveals that HTC for 0.5 hours achieves the highest process efficiency and net energy gain, suggesting the use of 210 degrees C, 0.5 hours HTC condition for energy production.

Management and valorization of digestate from food waste via hydrothermal

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that hydrothermal treatments can significantly improve the properties of food waste digestate, effectively reducing the amount of solid residue after treatment. Through hydrothermal treatment, organic matter and carbon dissolve into the liquid, while multivalent metals concentrate in the solid residue, making the digestate more stable.
