Microbial characteristics in anaerobic membrane bioreactor treating domestic sewage: Effects of HRT and process performance

Jialing Ni et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the microbial communities in two anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) with different membrane pore sizes. The results showed that the composition of the microbial communities changed with HRT, and the relative abundance of certain bacterial groups was proportional to biogas production performance. The study also suggested that the population of hydrogenotrophic methanogens or Anaerolineae can serve as indicators for process monitoring. Furthermore, both HRT and process stability were found to be important factors for maintaining microbial community structures.

Anaerobic digestion of chicken manure coupled with ammonia recovery by vacuum-assisted gas-permeable membrane process

Benchi Chen et al.

Summary: The study utilized a novel vacuum-assisted gas-permeable membrane (V-GPM) process to remove ammonia from liquid digestate, effectively addressing the ammonia inhibition issue during anaerobic digestion. Experimental results showed that the V-GPM process could efficiently remove more than 80% of ammonia from liquid digestate within a short period under high temperature and pressure conditions. The recycling of low-ammonia liquid digestate through ammonia removal treatment can lead to increased biogas yield, as demonstrated by a specific methane production increase from 1.0 L/g-VS to 2.4 L/g-VS.

Roent Dune A. Cayetano et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the benefits of biomass retention through dynamic membrane (DM) for stable performance of AnDMBR treating waste activated sludge, with an observed shift in archaeal population and functional gene expression at higher substrate concentrations. The presence of glycosyltransferase encoding genes in the biofilm formation process and the increase in average particle size distribution suggests the potential for high-rate treatment of waste activated sludge using an AnDMBR system.
