Activated carbon modified with nano manganese dioxide triggered electron transport pathway changes for boosted anaerobic treatment of dyeing wastewater

Linxuan Che et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the EGSB reactor modified with activated carbon and nano manganese dioxide showed efficient decolorization of azo dye wastewater with an average efficiency of 83% and enhanced COD removal. The addition of AC-MnO2 facilitated electron transfer in the anaerobic system, promoting decolorization of azo dyes by acting as a redox mediator. This resulted in decreased methanogenic activity and specific bacterial and archaeal community compositions.

Inhibitory effect of released phosphate on the ability of nano zero valent iron to boost anaerobic digestion of waste-activated sludge and the remediation method

Hui Xu et al.

Summary: The addition of NZVI can significantly accelerate the CH4 production in the AD process of WAS, but may lead to a decrease in CH4 production due to phosphate precipitates blocking the internal channels of AGS during continuous AD. The combination of GAC and NZVI can reduce the formation of phosphate precipitates and mitigate their inhibitory effect on CH4 production.

Role of redox-active biochar with distinctive electrochemical properties to promote methane production in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Yanwen Shen et al.

Summary: Biochar has been reported as an effective additive to improve methane production during anaerobic digestion, with the electron-donating capacity of biochar playing a key role in facilitating methane generation. The study found that electron transfer mediated by redox-active functional groups is a predominant mechanism for enhancing methanogenesis in anaerobic digesters treating waste activated sludge. Additionally, biochar amendment enriched Methanosarcina and Methanobacterium in the microbial community, contributing greatly to improved methane production.

Critical impacts of pyrolysis conditions and activation methods on application-oriented production of wood waste-derived biochar

Mingjing He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of different pyrolysis conditions and activation methods on the properties of biochar. It found that a temperature of 650 degrees Celsius was effective in forming carbonized structure, while 750 degrees Celsius was critical for the development of a porous structure. Longer pyrolysis duration increased pore volume, and activated biochar had a larger pore volume suitable for high-end applications.

Combined microbial transcript and metabolic analysis reveals the different roles of hydrochar and biochar in promoting anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Zhijian Shi et al.

Summary: The study found that hydrochar outperformed biochar in enhancing anaerobic digestion of hydrothermal pretreated waste activated sludge, especially HC2, due to its higher methane yield and production rate. Both hydrochar and biochar facilitated protein utilization and enriched different microbes involved in protein degradation, leading to increased methane production. Metabolomic analysis revealed that hydrochar and biochar induced significant changes in metabolites related to fatty acids and amino acids metabolism, showing rapid conversion of intermediate products and microbial community structure alignment.

Application of a Spiral Symmetric Stream Anaerobic Bioreactor for treating saline heparin sodium pharmaceutical wastewater: Reactor operating characteristics, organics degradation pathway and salt tolerance mechanism

Qi Song et al.

Summary: In this study, a Spiral Symmetry Stream Anaerobic Bioreactor (SSSAB) was used to treat actual saline heparin sodium pharmaceutical wastewater (HSPW), achieving a COD removal rate of 82%, higher than other reactors at similar salinity. The main organic compounds in HSPW are benzenes, with the degradations of phenol and p-cresol as the major rate-limiting steps. The microbial community in anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) adapted to the HSPW treatment, demonstrating the superiority of the SSSAB structure.

Core-shell ZVI@carbon composites reduce phosphate inhibition of ZVI dissolution and enhance methane production in an anaerobic sewage treatment

Hui Xu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of achieving energy recovery from phosphate-containing domestic sewage using an efficient anaerobic reactor with ZVI addition. The inhibitory effects of phosphate on ZVI dissolution are weakened by the use of ZVI@carbon composites, which promote methane production. The interaction between Fe2+ ions and phosphate concentrations and the surface passivation layer formation on ZVI are key factors influencing the effectiveness of ZVI in the presence of phosphate.
