Removal of antibiotic resistance genes from swine wastewater by membrane filtration treatment

Chengyu Liang et al.

Summary: The study used membrane filtration to treat swine wastewater, reducing conventional pollutants and ARGs, thus decreasing the risk of ARGs entering natural water bodies. Results showed that removal of ARGs was correlated with total phosphorus, suspended solids, and electrical conductivity in the wastewater.

Distribution patterns of antibiotic resistance genes and their bacterial hosts in pig farm wastewater treatment systems and soil fertilized with pig manure

Rong-Min Zhang et al.

Summary: The discharge of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) into the environment via pig manure has been studied through metagenomic analysis in three large pig farms. The distribution and shifts of ARGs and their bacterial hosts show distinct patterns along different stages of wastewater treatment. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes are identified as primary carriers of ARGs, with specific bacterial families contributing to different types of ARGs in feces, wastewater, and soil. High levels of heterogeneity are found for both ARGs and ARG-hosts in the wastewater treatment system and in agricultural soils for these pig farms.

Bacterial community compositions and nitrogen metabolism function in a cattle farm wastewater treatment plant revealed by Illumina high-throughput sequencing

Weizhi Yan et al.

Summary: This study used high-throughput sequencing technology to investigate the microbial community structure and diversity in a cattle farm wastewater treatment plant, revealing significant impacts of different stages on microbial community structure. The results also showed that total phosphorus is the most important factor regulating microbial community composition, and nitrogen metabolic pathway and transformation mechanism were elucidated.
