Sustainable, superhydrophobic membranes based on bacterial cellulose for gravity-driven oil/water separation

Feng-ping Wang et al.

Summary: Plant cellulose needle-leaf bleached kraft pulp (NBKP) was added to bacterial cellulose (BC) to create a superhydrophobic/superoleophilic membrane for oil/water separation, exhibiting excellent separation efficiency, recyclability, and durability. The membrane remained durably hydrophobic after multiple cycles and is expected to be highly energy-efficient.

Efficient simultaneous utilization of glucose and xylose from corn straw by Sphingomonas sanxanigenens NX02 to produce microbial exopolysaccharide

Mengmeng Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that the bacterium NX02 is able to produce exopolysaccharide from corn straw total hydrolysate with a slightly higher yield than that of glucose fermentation. Through comparative transcriptome analysis, the coexistence of three xylose metabolic pathways, incomplete phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent phosphotransferase system, and reinforced fructose metabolism were identified as the co-utilization mechanism. Therefore, strain NX02 has the potential to be an attractive platform organism for producing polysaccharides and other bio-based products from agricultural waste hydrolysate rich in both glucose and xylose.

Production of nisin-containing bacterial cellulose nanomaterials with antimicrobial properties through co-culturing Enterobacter sp. FY-07 and Lactococcus lactis N8

Ge Gao et al.

Summary: By co-cultivating BC-producing strain Enterobacter sp. FY-07 with nisin-producing strain Lactococcus lactis N8, a nisin-containing BC film (BC-N) was obtained with specific strong inhibitory effect on Gram-positive bacteria, while showing no significant impact on mammalian cell viability. This low-cost, facile and efficient technique provides a way to confer BC with antimicrobial properties and introduce other functions into BC for polymer applications.
