Rice straw burning: a review on its global prevalence and the sustainable alternatives for its effective mitigation

Gurraj Singh et al.

Summary: Rice is an important staple crop worldwide, but its production is associated with environmental concerns such as greenhouse gas emissions contributing to global warming. This study investigates the practice of rice straw burning globally and discusses alternatives for more sustainable utilization of agricultural wastes. Based on life cycle assessment studies, soil incorporation and electricity generation are identified as the most environmentally friendly alternatives with room for improvement in the future.

Effect of substrate load on anaerobic fermentation of rice straw with rumen liquid as inoculum: Hydrolysis and acidogenesis efficiency, enzymatic activities and rumen bacterial community structure

Jinsong Liang et al.

Summary: This study found that at a 10.0% rice straw load, the highest VFA concentration, mainly composed of acetic acid and propionic acid, was achieved, along with high SCOD concentration and enzyme activities. Lower diversity and richness of rumen bacteria were observed at this load compared to others. Bacteroides, Prevotella, and Ruminococcus were identified as the main rumen bacteria during rice straw degradation.

Characteristics and functional bacteria in a microbial consortium for rice straw lignin-degrading

Congfeng Xu et al.

Summary: The lignin-degrading bacterial consortium LDC efficiently degrades rice straw lignin in mineral salt medium. The microbial community structure and enzyme expression levels vary greatly during different incubation phases, with significant up-regulation of lignin degradation enzymes. This provides valuable microbial resources and data support for the industrialization of rice straw bio-pulping.

Recent advances in lignocellulose prior-fractionation for biomaterials, biochemicals, and bioenergy

Xiaojun Shen et al.

Summary: Lignocellulosic biomass is considered the best candidate for producing biomaterials, biochemicals, and bioenergy due to over-consumption of fossil resources and environmental problems. Efficient and green fractionation of lignocellulose components can greatly enhance high-value utilization and biorefinery development, but the heterogeneity of lignocellulosic structure poses challenges to this process. Through strategies such as cellulose-first, hemicelluloses-first, and lignin-first fractionation, selective dissociation and transformation of components in lignocellulose can be achieved, offering both challenges and opportunities for biorefining valorization.
