Insights into the effects of Zn exposure on the fate of tylosin resistance genes and dynamics of microbial community during co-composting with tylosin fermentation dregs and swine manure

Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of antibiotic resistance to heavy metal zinc in the co-composting process. The findings suggest that a decrease in bioavailable zinc content can reduce the level of tylosin resistance genes, and exposure to different levels of zinc may lead to a hormetic-like dose-response, with high doses inhibiting resistance genes and low doses stimulating their growth.

Review on pretreatment techniques to improve anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge

V Khanh Nguyen et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge is an efficient remediation technique, but the presence of complex floc structures and high organic matter content hinder hydrolysis. Pretreatment techniques such as mechanical, chemical, thermal, and biological processes can accelerate hydrolysis and improve AD efficiency.

Thermophilic rather than mesophilic sludge anaerobic digesters possess lower antibiotic resistant genes abundance

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: The abundance of sludge ARGs and plasmid ARGs in thermophilic digesters was significantly lower than in mesophilic digesters, while the cellfree ARGs abundance was similar. Thermophilic digesters had higher archaea abundance, lower bacteria abundance, and a different microbial community compared to mesophilic ones. Firmicutes may be potential hosts of ARGs in sludge anaerobic digestion. The distinct microbial community was the main contributor to the low ARGs abundance in thermophilic sludge AD, indicating that thermophilic operation at 55 ?C is more conducive to control ARGs.

Effects of bentonite on antibiotic resistance genes in biogas slurry and residue from thermophilic and mesophilic anaerobic digestion of food waste

Pan Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that adding bentonite during anaerobic digestion of food waste can increase methane production and effectively reduce the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in biogas residue. Bentonite and temperature were identified as major factors influencing the abundance of ARGs.
