Structural Changes in Milled Wood Lignin (MWL) of Chinese Quince (Chaenomeles sinensis) Fruit Subjected to Subcritical Water Treatment

Wen-Yue Wang et al.

Summary: Subcritical water treatment of Chinese quince fruits was found to increase xylose content and enhance thermal stability and molecular weight of milled wood lignin. NMR analysis revealed the presence of mainly β-O-4' ether bonds and G-S-H units in the lignin structure.

A novel recyclable furoic acid-assisted pretreatment for sugarcane bagasse biorefinery in co-production of xylooligosaccharides and glucose

Lin Dai et al.

Summary: This study utilized furoic acid as a catalyst to pretreat sugarcane bagasse, recovering xylooligosaccharides from hemicellulose and enhancing subsequent cellulose saccharification. By shortening reaction time and utilizing the recyclability of furoic acid, high yields of xylooligosaccharides and glucose were achieved from sugarcane bagasse.

Oligosaccharide preparation from microwave-ethanol pretreated Camellia oleifera seed shell by enzymolysis of Agrocybe aegerita

Chen Yan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to produce oligosaccharide from Camellia oleifera seed shell through the enzymolysis of edible fungus. Microwave-ethanol pretreatment significantly increased the removal rate of tannin and tea saponin in the seed shell. The highest hydrolyase activity was found in Agrocybe aegerita during solid-state fermentation, leading to the highest yield of oligosaccharide under optimal conditions. Analysis showed that the major components of the oligosaccharide were xylooligosaccharide and cellooligosaccharide with a polymerization degree of 2-8, and no toxic byproducts existed in the hydrolysate.

Utilization of tea oil camellia (Camellia oleifera Abel.) shells as alternative raw materials for manufacturing particleboard

Kamran Choupani Chaydarreh et al.

Summary: The study shows that tea oil camellia shell can be used as a raw material in the particleboard industry, replacing wood and effectively utilizing resources. In the experiments, when 50% TOCS particles and 50% commercial wood particles are used in the mat, along with the appropriate adhesive, it can meet the requirements of European standard P2 and P3 particleboard types.

Microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvents (DES) pretreatment of control and transgenic poplars for boosting the lignin valorization and cellulose bioconversion

Cheng-Ye Ma et al.

Summary: This study developed a microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvents (DES) pretreatment method to improve the extractability and valorization of lignin in poplar wood, reducing biomass recalcitrance. The results showed that the pretreatment significantly increased the yield of DES lignin in transgenic poplar woods compared to control, and also led to decreased molecular weight and different linkages in the lignin fractions. Moreover, the DES pretreatment facilitated lignin isolation and improved enzymatic saccharification ratios, indicating a strong deconstruction ability towards poplar wood and boosting cellulose bioconversion.
