Assessment of Disintegration of Compostable Bioplastic Bags by Management of Electromechanical and Static Home Composters

Lorenzo Maria Cafiero et al.

Summary: This study examined the physical degradation percentage of compostable bioplastic bags in two types of composters, showing that 90-96 wt% degradation can be achieved in six months in static home composters, and 90 wt% degradation in two months in an electromechanical composter. Additional curing treatment ensured complete physical degradation in the latter case. The use of compostable bioplastic bags appeared promising and consistent with home composting practices in terms of level and times of physical degradation.

Anaerobic co-digestion of bioplastics as a sustainable mode of waste management with improved energy production - A review

Amith Abraham et al.

Summary: The world of bioplastics has rapidly expanded, generating new waste streams that pose challenges to waste processing; anaerobic co-digestion is considered the best option for efficient bioplastic waste processing with reduced space requirements and environmental pollution; the higher C/N ratio of bioplastics presents a challenge to anaerobic digestion, but co-digestion with lower C/N ratio biowastes can improve biogas production.

Ecological risk assessment of microplastics in coastal, shelf, and deep sea waters with a consideration of environmentally relevant size and shape

Jae-Woong Jung et al.

Summary: The study assessed the ecological risk of microplastics in different seawater regions of South Korea, finding that current pollution levels do not pose a significant threat, but predicting a 50-fold increase by 2100 which would surpass safe levels for marine ecosystems. Urgent precautionary actions are needed to prevent further increase in microplastic concentrations.

The degradation performance of different microplastics and their effect on microbial community during composting process

Yue Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation characteristics of different microplastics during composting, finding that abundance and size of microplastics generally decrease post-composting. Surface erosion and cracks are observed on all microplastics, with reduced carbon content. Additionally, exposure to microplastics leads to a decrease in bacterial community richness and diversity, particularly with PVC microplastics.

Hazard profiling of compostable shopping bags. Towards an ecological risk assessment of littering

Marco Barbale et al.

Summary: Littering poses an ecological threat, with a focus on microplastics formation and quantification. There is a need for a framework approach to assess ecological hazards associated with litter, particularly packaging litter. This study proposes a characterization methodology for evaluating the ecological hazard of packaging and single-use items, and conducted preliminary tests using this methodology.

Methane production and active microbial communities during anaerobic digestion of three commercial biodegradable coffee capsules under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions

G. Cazaudehore et al.

Summary: The biodegradable plastics in coffee capsules were compared under mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion conditions, with the latter showing better degradation efficiency. Different biodegradable plastics had minimal impact on microbial community composition, with the genus Tepidimicrobium identified as a key microorganism involved in the thermophilic conversion of biodegradable plastic into methane.
