Bamboo charcoal addition enhanced the nitrogen removal of anammox granular sludge with COD: Performance, physicochemical characteristics and microbial community

Menglei Guo et al.

Summary: The effects of different chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations on anammox granular sludge with Bamboo Charcoal (BC) addition were evaluated. The results showed that BC addition significantly increased TN removal efficiency and promoted the biological characteristics of granular sludge. High throughput sequencing and metagenomic sequencing analysis revealed the impact of BC addition on bacterial diversity and functional genes.

Heterotrophic nitrification and biomineralization potential of Pseudomonas sp. HXF1 for the simultaneous removal of ammonia nitrogen and fluoride from groundwater

Xiaofen Hu et al.

Summary: Pseudomonas sp. HXF1, capable of heterotrophic nitrification, aerobic denitrification, and biomineralization, was employed for the simultaneous removal of ammonia nitrogen and fluoride. The strain showed promising results in the removal of NH4+-N and F-. RSM was used to study the best removal conditions, indicating the potential of strain HXF1 in biological denitrification and F- removal in groundwater.

Enhanced nitrogen removal from high-strength ammonium wastewater by improving heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification process: Insight into the influence of dissolved oxygen in the outer layer of the biofilm

PengYing Xiao et al.

Summary: Optimizing the heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification process in the membrane-aerated biofilm reactor by increasing dissolved oxygen concentration in the outer layer biofilm enhances removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, TN, and COD. The increase in DO concentrations promotes the enrichment of HN-AD bacteria and leads to a superior nitrogen removal process in high-strength NH4+-N wastewater treatment.

Characterization of communities in a microalgae-bacteria system treating domestic wastewater reveals dominance of phototrophic and pigmented bacteria

Santiago Barreiro-Vescovo et al.

Summary: The consortia formed by micmalgae and bacteria in photo-bioreactors treating domestic wastewater were characterized by flow cytometry and DGGE techniques. The dominance of photoheterotroph and pigmented bacteria reduced the metabolic capability of the photobioreactor, resulting in insufficient wastewater treatment. The quantification conducted by flow cytometry evidenced bacterial population displacement favoring pigmented and photoheterotrophic groups, correlating with DGGE analysis showing changes in bacterial community composition.
