Comprehensive comparison of acidic and alkaline anaerobic fermentations of waste activated sludge

Yun Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that alkaline fermentation of waste activated sludge increases biopolymer release and benefits VFAs production. However, the released organic matter in alkaline fermentation has low biodegradability, leading to increased nutrient loads in BNR effluent. Additionally, aluminum is more readily released in alkaline fermentation, impacting the filterability of fermented sludge.

Enhancement of enzyme activities and VFA conversion by adding Fe/C in two-phase high-solid digestion of food waste: Performance and microbial community structure

Pingbo Wang et al.

Summary: The addition of Fe/C in two-phase high-solid digestion significantly increased the cumulative yield of biomethane and biodegradation rate. Fe/C mainly affected the performance of the acidification phase, and in the two-phase anaerobic fermentation system, the pathway of methane production shifted from using acetic acid to using hydrogen as the reactant.

Effect of non-covalent binding of phenolic derivatives with scallop (Patinopecten yessoensis) gonad protein isolates on protein structure and in vitro digestion characteristics

Jiarun Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interaction mechanism between EGCG and SGPIs, finding that the interaction was mainly dominated by hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces, with EGCG-treated SGPIs showing higher antioxidant activity. These results provide a theoretical basis for the application of SGPIs-phenolic complexes as functional food additives.

Metatranscriptomic insights of the metabolic process enhancement during food wastes fermentation driven by linear alkylbenzene sulphonates

Jingyang Luo et al.

Summary: The study suggests that adding an appropriate amount of LAS can significantly increase VFA production by promoting the hydrolysis and solubilization of organic components in FW. Further analysis shows that the interaction between LAS and cell membranes enhances the cell permeability, facilitating the transport of substrates into functional microorganisms for metabolism.

Anaerobic fermentation metabolism of Moorella thermoacetica inhibited by copper nanoparticles: Comprehensive analyses of transcriptional response and enzyme activity

Yang Wu et al.

Summary: The study showed that copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) could inhibit the growth and metabolism of Moorella thermoacetica by causing cell membrane oxidative damage, reducing glucose consumption, and decreasing key enzyme activities related to acetic acid production. This suggests that the release of Cu NPs in the environment poses risks to anaerobic fermentation processes by affecting microbial transcriptional response and enzyme activity.
