Enzymatic conversion of treated oil palm empty fruit bunches fiber into fermentable sugars: optimization of solid and protein loadings and surfactant effects

Camila Charpentier Alfaro et al.

Summary: In this study, EPFBF was pretreated with sequential diluted acid/alkali to enhance enzymatic digestibility, optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The addition of PEG 8000 showed the highest glucose release during enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated EPFBF. Using simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF), ethanol was produced with a final concentration of 32.6 +/- 1.0 g/L, demonstrating an efficiency of 74.1% and an overall productivity of 0.6 g/(L h).

Natural surfactant-aided dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment of waste wheat straw to enhance enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency

Wei Tang et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel biorefinery method for waste wheat straw, in which a natural surfactant humic acid was used during acidic pretreatment to enhance enzymatic saccharification efficiency. The success of enzymatic digestion was attributed to improved accessibility of cellulose to cellulase and structural changes in lignocellulose. These findings suggest that humic acid may be a beneficial surfactant in biorefinery processes and could potentially inspire research into other natural surfactants.
