Ammonia-induced inhibition of manure-based continuous biomethanation process under different organic loading rates and associated microbial community dynamics

M. L. Christou et al.

Summary: In this study, the operation of three CTSRs under different OLR conditions revealed that increasing the OLR to raise the C/N ratio can intensify the inhibition of anaerobic processes, especially under high ammonia concentration. Different responses of bacterial and archaeal communities were observed under ammonia stress conditions. Additionally, the dominant methanogenesis route varied depending on the OLR and ammonia concentration.

Impacts of biochar on anaerobic digestion of swine manure: Methanogenesis and antibiotic resistance genes dissemination

Shuo Yang et al.

Summary: The addition of biochar significantly increased methane yield during anaerobic digestion of swine manure, while reducing the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes. Furthermore, biochar indirectly affected ARGs by altering microbial structure and the integrase gene intI1.

Accelerating anaerobic digestion for methane production: Potential role of direct interspecies electron transfer

Zixin Wang et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is a commercial technology used for producing bioenergy from waste, but suffers from inefficiencies. Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) is seen as a potential solution to enhance the process, as it allows for faster and more stable transport of reducing equivalents between bacteria and archaea. This review paper discusses different mechanisms of DIET, its role during organic degradation, startup performance, methane production, and potential industrial applications.

Enhancing methanogenic fermentation of waste activated sludge via isoelectric-point pretreatment: Insights from interfacial thermodynamics, electron transfer and microbial community

Ying Xu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the efficiency of methane generation from waste activated sludge (WAS) can be significantly enhanced through pretreatment with isoelectric-point (pI), which improves the hydrophobic attractions at the solid-liquid interface and promotes electron transfer efficiency. The pI pretreatment also led to an increase in the relative abundances of main functional microbes related to hydrolysis, acidification, and methanation, contributing to an overall boost in methane production.
