Making waves: A proposed new role for myosin-binding protein C in regulating oscillatory contractions in vertebrate striated muscle

Samantha P. Harris

Summary: Myosin-binding protein C (MyBP-C) plays a crucial role in regulating muscle performance by stabilizing a newly discovered super-relaxed state of myosin on thick filaments and prolonging the on state of actin on thin filaments. Its dual interactions with both myosin and actin are important for understanding its new functions and implications in muscle contraction and relaxation. Further exploration of its molecular mechanisms as a wave maker or a wave breaker will provide insights into previously unrecognized regulatory mechanisms in vertebrate striated muscle.

Multiscale modeling of twitch contractions in cardiac trabeculae

Srboljub M. Mijailovich et al.

Summary: Understanding the dynamics of a cardiac muscle twitch contraction is complex, involving detailed processes such as the Ca2+ transient, thin-filament activation, and the myosin-actin cross-bridge chemomechanical cycle. Computational modeling can provide insights into how these processes affect contractile behavior and how mutations may impact these processes. Validation of computational models depends on experimental data, but there is a lack of comprehensive datasets to simulate various parameters simultaneously.

The spatial distribution of thin filament activation influences force development and myosin activity in computational models of muscle contraction

Axel J. Fenwick et al.

Summary: The research shows that variations in thin filament length and RU density affect the behavior of cross-bridges and force production in muscles. Shorter thin filament lengths and lower RU density can weaken the muscle's ability to generate force.
