Associations of essential and toxic metals/metalloids in whole blood with both disease severity and mortality in patients with COVID-19

Hao-Long Zeng et al.

Summary: The levels of essential and toxic metal(loid)s in COVID-19 patients may be associated with disease severity and mortality. Higher levels of calcium, chromium, and copper were found in severe cases, while lower levels of magnesium, manganese, iron, zinc, arsenic, thallium, and lead were observed. Chromium and cadmium were associated with increased risk of death, while arsenic was associated with lower risk. Iron, age, and sex were independent factors related to disease severity, and chromium, cadmium, and cardiovascular disease comorbidity were independent factors related to mortality. Monitoring changes in whole blood metal(loid)s may be helpful in evaluating dynamic changes in COVID-19 patients.

Susceptibility of the patients infected with Sars-Cov2 to oxidative stress and possible interplay with severity of the disease

Summary: The study investigated the association between COVID-19 severity and oxidative stress parameters in 77 hospitalized patients. While severe patients with high serum leukocyte count and CRP level had longer hospital stays, there was no correlation found between oxidative stress parameters and disease severity. These results suggest that disease severity may not influence the redox profile changes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus first reported in China, causes COVID-19 with lower mortality but higher transmissibility compared to other coronaviruses. Immune dysregulation leading to hyperinflammation is a common feature of COVID-19, associated with zinc deficiency affecting normal immune function. Zinc plays a crucial role in antiviral immunity and may have therapeutic potential in managing COVID-19 patients, including inhibiting SARS-CoV replication and improving tissue damage caused by mechanical ventilation.
