Identification of the major fermentation inhibitors of recombinant 2G yeasts in diverse lignocellulose hydrolysates

Gert Vanmarcke et al.

Summary: The study investigated the inhibition of ethanol fermentation by two industrial second-generation yeast strains in five lignocellulose hydrolysates. The results showed that the presence of furfural at industrially relevant concentrations caused partial inhibition of glucose and xylose consumption. Furthermore, the addition of 3 or 6 g/L furfural significantly reduced the ethanol titer obtained with strain MD4 in all evaluated hydrolysates.

Microbial biofilms in biorefinery-Towards a sustainable production of low-value bulk chemicals and fuels

Pascal S. Leonov et al.

Summary: Harnessing the potential of biofilm fermentations for converting renewable biomass into value-added products has shown promise in improving productivity and product yields, as well as enhancing resistance to hazardous environments. However, challenges such as inconsistent fermentation performance, slow reactor start-up, and insufficient process monitoring still hinder the commercialization of this technology. A multidisciplinary approach combining genetic engineering, specialized biofilm reactor development, model-based process control, and mixed microbial biofilm technology may be crucial for overcoming these challenges and realizing the full potential of biofilm fermentations.
