Morphology-controllable amphiphilic cellulose microgels made from self-assembly of hydrophobic long-chain bromide-alkylated-cellulose/gelatin copolymer

Yijun Yao et al.

Summary: A cellulose-based microgel is synthesized by chemically coupling gelatin and cellulose, and amphiphilic cellulose copolymers (HMGC) are prepared from alkylated cellulose-based microgel with different long-chain alkyl groups. These HMGC can self-assemble into microgels of various morphologies, such as cotton flocculence, sphere, rod-like, vesicle, flower-like cluster, snowflake-like, urchin-like, and coral shapes, which can be controlled by adjusting the degree of alkylation, the length of the alkyl chain, and the concentration of microgel.

Redox-responsive polyethyleneimine/tetrahedron DNA/doxorubicin nanocomplexes for deep cell/tissue penetration to overcome multidrug resistance

Jianqin Yan et al.

Summary: The study introduced redox-responsive nanocomplexes for deep penetration into cancer cells and tissues, overcoming multidrug resistance. Results showed that the nanocomplexes could bind to cell membranes, create holes, enhance cellular internalization, and penetrate deep tumor tissues through leakage and infection. In vivo studies demonstrated superior tumor penetration and therapeutic efficiency in drug-resistant tumor models representing different MDR characteristics.

Poly(amino acid)s-based star AIEgens for cell uptake with pH-response and chiral difference

Wenli Feng et al.

Summary: Chiral aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) are new-generation chiral sensors that regulate chiral signals from molecular to macroscopic levels. The study synthesized two star chiral AIEgens with pH-responsive characteristics, showing strong AIE-related emission in acidic solution. The research revealed that these AIEgens can enter living cells through ATP-dependent endocytosis and exhibit chiral-dependent and pH-responsive internalization processes in human hepatocarcinoma cells (HepG2). This novel strategy of synthesizing poly(amino acid)s functionalized AIEgens could inspire the development of promising fluorescent materials with chirality.

Multipoint Hydrogen Bonding-Based Molecular Recognition of Amino Acids and Peptide Derivatives in a Porous Metal-Macrocycle Framework: Residue-Specificity, Diastereoselectivity, and Conformational Control

Shohei Tashiro et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the molecular recognition of amino acid and peptide derivatives by multipoint hydrogen bonding in a porous metal-macrocycle framework revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. l-Serine residues are site-selectively and residue-specifically adsorbed on the pore surface via multiple hydrogen bonds. A serine derivative is diastereoselectively recognized on the (P)- or (M)-side of the enantiomeric pore surface, and the conformation of the peptide is highly regulated, incorporating a poly-L-proline type I helix-like structure into the pore.
