Quorum sensing: a new prospect for the management of antimicrobial-resistant infectious diseases

Mainul Haque et al.

Summary: Quorum-sensing (QS) is a microbial cell-to-cell communication system that regulates interactions between host and microbial flora, as well as controlling virulence factors. Certain compounds are considered QS inhibitors (QSIs) that can inhibit microbial QS system as potential antimicrobial therapeutic options. Further research is needed to evaluate the efficacy of QSIs in treating infectious diseases.

Trp-Containing Antibacterial Peptides Impair Quorum Sensing and Biofilm Development in Multidrug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Exhibit Synergistic Effects With Antibiotics

Dejing Shang et al.

Summary: Low concentrations of Trp-containing peptides were found to reduce the production of QS-regulated virulence factors in strain MRPA0108 by downregulating gene expression of both the las and rhl systems. This led to the inhibition of biofilm formation and changes in extracellular production of pseudomonal virulence factors and swarming motility. Synergistic effects were observed when combining Trp-containing peptides with ceftazidime and piperacillin, particularly with L11W and L12W showing the highest synergy. Additionally, Trp-containing peptides, especially L12W, decreased beta-lactamase activity and expression of efflux pump genes, resulting in increased antibacterial activity of the antibiotics against MRPA0108.
