Trade-Offs (and Constraints) in Organismal Biology

Theodore Garland et al.

Summary: Trade-offs and constraints are important aspects in both organismal and evolutionary biology. They can be defined and categorized in various ways, including allocation constraints, functional conflicts, shared biochemical pathways, antagonistic pleiotropy, ecological circumstances, and sexual selection. Empirical studies often look for negative correlations between traits as evidence of trade-offs, but this approach may not be sufficient for complex physiological networks or multiple traits. Trade-offs may occur in harsh environmental conditions and can be circumvented through compensatory mechanisms.

Early-life effects of juvenile Western diet and exercise on adult gut microbiome composition in mice

Monica P. McNamara et al.

Summary: Changes in diet and exercise during early life have significant effects on the adult microbiome, with long-lasting impacts even after a washout period. The composition and diversity of the microbiome are influenced by genetic line type, juvenile diet, and/or exercise, highlighting the interactive effects of these factors. These findings suggest a complex relationship between early-life factors and the gut microbiome, with implications for host health and development.

Physiological Genomics of Adaptation to High-Altitude Hypoxia

Jay F. Storz et al.

Summary: Population genomic studies on high-altitude adaptation have generated hypotheses about genes and pathways, but experimental tests are needed to identify causal mechanisms. Moving from candidate genes to phenotypic targets is challenging, as genotype-phenotype associations may reflect secondary consequences of changes in other traits linked via homeostatic regulation. Recent research on high-altitude models has revealed plastic and evolved changes in respiratory, cardiovascular, and metabolic traits affecting aerobic performance capacity in hypoxia.

High-Altitude Adaptation: Mechanistic Insights from Integrated Genomics and Physiology

Jay F. Storz

Summary: Population genomic analyses have identified candidate genes for hypoxia adaptation in high-altitude humans and other vertebrates, with subsequent studies revealing associations between genotypes and hypoxia-responsive phenotypes. However, deciphering causal mechanisms is complicated by potential second-order consequences of selection-mediated changes in other traits, and manipulative experiments are critical for identifying causal relationships underlying genotype-phenotype associations.
