Ethanol production from different medium compositions of rice husk hydrolysate by using Scheffersomyces stipitis in a repeated-batch biofilm reactor and its modeling

Nour Ben Bader et al.

Summary: This study aimed to produce ethanol from detoxified/enriched rice husk hydrolysate using Scheffersomyces stipitis in biofilm reactor and predict experimental data using models. The best carbon source compositions were identified, and the PE was found to be the best nitrogen source compared to beef extract and NH4NO3. The Fitzhugh and Morgan-Mercer-Flodin models were found to be the best for biomass production and fit well with experimental data for ethanol production and substrate consumption.

A novel d-xylose isomerase from the gut of the wood feeding beetle Odontotaenius disjunctus efficiently expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Paulo Cesar Silva et al.

Summary: A newly cloned d-xylose isomerase derived from microorganisms in the gut of the wood-feeding beetle Odontotaenius disjunctus showed higher specific activity, lower K-M for d-xylose, and broader temperature range compared to previously reported XIs. The expression of this new XI in Saccharomyces cerevisiae resulted in faster growth and higher d-xylose isomerization rate, with no inhibition by xylitol up to 8 g L-1.

Identification of the major fermentation inhibitors of recombinant 2G yeasts in diverse lignocellulose hydrolysates

Gert Vanmarcke et al.

Summary: The study investigated the inhibition of ethanol fermentation by two industrial second-generation yeast strains in five lignocellulose hydrolysates. The results showed that the presence of furfural at industrially relevant concentrations caused partial inhibition of glucose and xylose consumption. Furthermore, the addition of 3 or 6 g/L furfural significantly reduced the ethanol titer obtained with strain MD4 in all evaluated hydrolysates.

Summary: This study identified a thermotolerant yeast strain TC-5 for bioethanol production from CRC residue, showing comparable ethanol concentrations under various fermentation methods at elevated temperatures. The SSF process with TC-5 exhibited the highest ethanol productivity, especially at 40 degrees C. The use of TC-5 for bioethanol production from second-generation substrates under elevated temperatures shows promising results.
