Sudden Cell Death Induced by Ca2+ Delivery via Microbubble Cavitation

Martynas Maciulevicius et al.

Summary: Research has shown that different calcium concentrations affect cell membrane permeability and cell viability during sonoporation, with ultrasound-microbubble cavitation playing a significant role. The study also indicates that inertial cavitation activities are directly involved in calcium delivery via sonoporation, leading to rapid cell death.

Timescale of hole closure during plasma membrane repair estimated by calcium imaging and numerical modeling

Martin Berg Klenow et al.

Summary: Cell membrane repair is crucial for cell survival, with closure of the membrane hole identified as a key event that allows the cell to recover. By implementing calcium imaging in damaged breast carcinoma cells and using a spatio-temporal calcium distribution model, the time point of hole closure was determined. Additionally, the analysis estimated the characteristic time scale of calcium removal, penetration depth of the calcium wave, and diffusion coefficient. Studying hole closure times proves to be a useful tool for quantifying plasma membrane repair efficiency.

To Close or to Collapse: The Role of Charges on Membrane Stability upon Pore Formation

Rafael B. Lira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of membrane surface charge and medium composition on membrane stability, explores the destabilization responses of charged lipid vesicles under strong electric pulses, and identifies the role of membrane edge tension in pore closure. The findings are crucial for understanding mechanisms in cells to prevent total membrane collapse upon poration.
