Comparison of soluble microbial product (SMP) production in full-scale anaerobic/aerobic industrial wastewater treatment and a laboratory based synthetic feed anaerobic membrane system

Yan Ni Annie Soh et al.

Summary: This study focused on the characterisation of soluble microbial products (SMPs) produced from a full-scale multistage industrial wastewater treatment plant and a lab-scale AnMBR treating synthetic wastewater. Analysis using GC-MS and LC-QToF showed differences in SMPs between anaerobic and aerobic systems, with aerobic MBR effluent containing more cell-signalling compounds. The data could contribute to applications in various areas such as controlling quorum-sensing and biofilm formation, process optimisation, and microbial ecology.

The role of beneficial microorganisms in an anoxic-oxic (AO) process for treatment of ammonium-rich landfill leachates: Nitrogen removal and excess sludge reduction

Yu Cheng et al.

Summary: This study found that the process with beneficial microorganisms, known as AO-M, was more effective in removing dissolved organic compounds and nitrogen species compared to the process without beneficial microorganisms, known as AO-N. Additionally, the production of excess sludge was significantly reduced in the AO-M process due to enhanced endogenous respiration and enzyme activity of microorganisms.
