Rapid U-Pb Geochronology by Laser Ablation Multi-Collector ICP-MS

Kurt E. Sundell et al.

Summary: The study presents a method to acquire zircon U-Pb dates at significantly higher rates using multi-collector LA-ICP-MS. Results showed that the new method yielded robust age distributions suitable for quantitative analysis and maximum depositional age calculations. The study holds promise for DZ geochronology with minor sacrifices in accuracy and measurement uncertainty.

Detrital zircon populations of the eastern Laurentian margin in the Appalachians

Yvette D. Kuiper et al.

Summary: The newly compiled U-Pb detrital zircon data from eight geographic domains along the eastern Laurentian margin show a consistent signature along strike, with a small ca. 2.7 Ga population and a major ca. 1.9-0.9 Ga population. The different populations of detrital zircon come from various sources including Archean crust, Paleoproterozoic orogens, Granite-Rhyolite Province, Elzevir terrane, and Grenville Province.

Maximum depositional age estimation revisited

Pieter Vermeesch

Summary: In a recent review, nine methods of estimating the maximum depositional age (MDA) of siliclastic rocks using detrital geochronology were compared, revealing biases in most methods. The Maximum Likelihood Age (MLA) algorithm, based on a binary mixture of distributions, was found to successfully estimate MDA with less bias than ad hoc methods. This approach has potential applications beyond detrital geochronology.

Pre-Thrusting Stratigraphic Control on the Transition From a Thin-Skinned to Thick-Skinned Structural Style: An Example From the Double-Decker Idaho-Montana Fold-Thrust Belt

S. D. Parker et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the Idaho-Montana fold-thrust belt is a double-decker system, with upper thin-skinned and lower thick-skinned domains. Thick-skinned thrusting occurs more than 50 km from the foreland, coinciding with a regional basement high.

Early Cretaceous Provenance, Sediment Dispersal, and Foreland Basin Development in Southwestern Montana, North American Cordillera

Justin A. Rosenblume et al.

Summary: The Lower Cretaceous Kootenai Formation in western Montana showed three discrete provenance signatures, indicating different sediment sources from adjacent regions in Early Cretaceous time. These findings provide insights into the sediment dispersal patterns and translational history of terranes in the hinterland of the orogen during this period.

Detrital zircon record of magmatism and sediment dispersal across the North American Cordilleran arc system (28-48°N)

Theresa M. Schwartz et al.

Summary: The utilization of detrital zircon data has enabled researchers to explore the evolution of arc magmatism and related geological issues; focusing on the detrital zircon data derived from arc sources, it reveals a continuous history of arc magmatism; the compilation of data highlights the close relationship between arc magmatism and sediment dispersal.

Dating lacustrine carbonate strata with detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology

Emily S. Finzel et al.

Summary: This study presents U-Pb geochronology of detrital zircons from lacustrine carbonate strata in southwestern Montana, USA, providing evidence for the effectiveness of acid-digestion recovery and resolving depositional ages of nonmarine strata. The results indicate that detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology holds considerable potential for dating critical chemical and climatic events recorded in the stratigraphy of lacustrine carbonates.
