Maternal Obesity Influences Placental Nutrient Transport, Inflammatory Status, and Morphology in Human Term Placenta

Perrine Nogues et al.

Summary: Contrary to the initial hypothesis, maternal obesity was found to be associated with lower placental IL-6 expression and macrophage/leukocyte infiltration, as well as lower placental expression of GLUT1 and SNAT1-2, lower placental vessel density, and lower levels of placental leptin and human chorionic gonadotropin production. These results indicate that the placenta is a flexible organ that can optimize fetal growth, and a better understanding of placental adaptation is needed to determine fetal outcomes in cases of maternal obesity.

Glycemic Control in Pregnancies Complicated by Pre-Existing Diabetes Mellitus and Congenital Malformations: A Danish Population-Based Study

Linn Hakonsen Arendt et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the prevalence of major congenital abnormalities increased progressively with poor glycemic control during pregnancy for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, with no obvious safe threshold level. Mothers with type 1 diabetes had higher risks than those without diabetes regardless of HbA1c levels, and higher maternal HbA1c levels were associated with increased odds of major congenital malformations.
