Effects of aerosols and water vapour on spatial-temporal variations of the clear-sky surface solar radiation in China

Lan Yu et al.

Summary: Clear-sky solar radiation is an important indicator of solar energy potential, with aerosols and water vapor being the main factors causing losses of surface solar radiation. This study created a clear-sky SSR dataset for China from 2001 to 2015 using satellite aerosol data and reanalysis water vapor data, calculating the aerosol direct radiative effect (ADRE) and water vapor radiative effect (WVRE) to study the losses. The results show seasonal variations in the impacts of aerosols and water vapor on clear-sky solar radiation, with ADRE variations being the main factor controlling annual trends.

Season-dependent uncertainties in Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) solar radiation data

Jinhuan Qiu et al.

Summary: The study improved a novel radiation calibration method and analyzed the uncertainties in global, direct, and scattering solar irradiance measurements in different seasons, attributing the discrepancies to the temperature dependency of solar radiometers. Validation through comparisons of aerosol optical thickness retrievals and in situ radiation measurements with model simulations confirmed the reliability of the calibration results.

Climatology and trends of downward shortwave radiation over Brazil

Cristian Felipe Zuluaga et al.

Summary: The study investigates the solar downward shortwave radiation (DSWR) over Brazil between 1980 and 2016, showing an increase in both annual and seasonal DSWR across all regions, particularly in the northern, west central, and southeastern parts. Changes in cloud cover (CC) are linked to DSWR changes and are considered a primary modulating factor for brightening in Brazil. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ERA5) reanalysis is found to be a reliable option for investigating DSWR trends across Brazil.
