Understanding the impact of meteorology on ozone in 334 cities of China

Chengyuan Hu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics of O3 pollution in China and identified the significant impact of meteorological conditions on its variations. By using GAMs, models were developed to predict O3 concentration for different cities, with temperature, relative humidity, and sunshine hours being the top influencing factors. The study revealed the non-linear influence of meteorological factors on O3 pollution, which was significantly improved when considering the interaction between variables.

Impacts of LULC, FDDA, Topo-wind and UCM schemes on WRF-CMAQ over the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, China

Kun Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impacts of LULC change, FDDA, Topo-wind, and UCM schemes on meteorology and air quality, with UCM improving simulation of T2 and RH compared to LULC change, and Topo-wind scheme slowing down surface wind speed, especially at night. FDDA scheme significantly affected surface and aloft wind speed, with better simulation results for O-3 than other schemes, and the combination of all four schemes showed the best simulation performance for surface wind speed, pressure, SO2 and PM2.5 among scenarios, especially for stations with severe air pollution.

Modeling Ammonia and Its Uptake by Secondary Organic Aerosol Over China

Kai Wu et al.

Summary: NH3 can react with SOA to form NOCs, which further react to form heterocyclic organic compounds. The uptake of NH3 by SOA leads to a decrease in gas-phase NH3 mixing ratio, reducing ammonium nitrate but having little impact on ammonium sulfate concentration, resulting in a reduction of average PM2.5 concentration.

Origin of regional springtime ozone episodes in the Sichuan Basin, China: Role of synoptic forcing and regional transport

Xianyu Yang et al.

Summary: This study revealed the formation mechanism and sources of a severe O3 episode in spring 2020 over the Sichuan Basin, emphasizing the roles of the northeastern and southeastern corridors in regional transport and highlighting the need for joint emission regulation across the entire basin to mitigate ozone pollution.

Effects of Anthropogenic and Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds on Los Angeles Air Quality

Shan Gu et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significant impact of future urban greening programs that increase biogenic VOC emissions on urban air quality, offsetting the benefits of reducing anthropogenic VOC emissions. Therefore, urban greening projects need to consider both anthropogenic and biogenic VOC contributions to secondary pollution, and should choose vegetation types with low VOC emissions to prevent further degradation of urban air quality.
