Measurements of Total OH Reactivity During CalNex-LA

R. F. Hansen et al.

Summary: The study found that during the California Research at the Nexus of Air Quality and Climate Change field campaign, the measured total OH reactivity was consistently higher than the calculated values, with an average missing OH reactivity of 8-10 s(-1), accounting for approximately 40% of the measured total OH reactivity. The missing OH reactivity was likely due to a combination of unmeasured local emissions and unmeasured oxidation products transported to the site, with about 50% possibly coming from emissions of unmeasured volatile chemical products like pesticides and cleaning agents.

Kinetics and impacting factors of HO2 uptake onto submicron atmospheric aerosols during the 2019 Air QUAlity Study (AQUAS) in Yokohama, Japan

Jun Zhou et al.

Summary: The HO2 uptake kinetics onto ambient aerosols are crucial in tropospheric chemistry, yet not fully understood. Due to the low reactivity of ambient aerosols, traditional analytical techniques are unable to achieve the necessary precision. This study developed an online approach to investigate the lower-limit values of HO2 reactivities and HO2 uptake coefficients onto ambient aerosols, revealing the key role of transition metals in these processes.

Evaluating the sensitivity of radical chemistry and ozone formation to ambient VOCs and NOx in Beijing

Lisa K. Whalley et al.

Summary: Measurements of various radicals were taken during the AIRPRO campaign in central Beijing in the summer of 2017, showing elevated concentrations. OH reactivity and radical budgets were found to be sensitive to NO concentrations, with potential missing sources and sinks of OH and RO2 under certain conditions. The modeling results indicate the need for better understanding of RO2 species and their reactions to accurately simulate ozone production in VOC-rich environments like Beijing.
