Parker Solar Probe Evidence for the Absence of Whistlers Close to the Sun to Scatter Strahl and to Regulate Heat Flux

C. Cattell et al.

Summary: In this study, statistical properties of narrowband whistlers were analyzed using data from the Parker Solar Probe, and compared with electron properties. The results showed that whistlers are rarely observed near the Sun and occur within a specific range of electron beta. Additionally, the lack of narrowband whistlers has significant implications for understanding the evolution of flare-accelerated electrons and the regulation of heat flux.

Electron heat flux in the near-Sun environment

Summary: The analysis of Parker Solar Probe's observations near the Sun revealed trends in electron heat flux related to plasma beta values. In high beta regions, while the heat flux decreases, the suprathermal electron flux remains stable or even increases.

Whistler wave occurrence and the interaction with strahl electrons during the first encounter of Parker Solar Probe

V. K. Jagarlamudi et al.

Summary: The study reveals that narrowband whistler waves have a low occurrence rate during the first encounter of Parker Solar Probe, with most waves lasting less than 3 seconds and showing an anticorrelation with the solar wind velocity. Additionally, the study indicates that the presence of whistler waves leads to broadening of pitch-angle widths of strahl electrons and suggests an interaction resulting in pitch-angle scattering.

Narrowband oblique whistler-mode waves: comparing properties observed by Parker Solar Probe at <0.3 AU and STEREO at 1 AU

C. Cattell et al.

Summary: The study mainly observed narrowband whistler waves near the Sun, finding that these waves are often more intermittent compared to those at 1 AU, and they are interspersed with higher-frequency electrostatic whistler waves. This is likely due to the more variable solar wind observed closer to the Sun.

Whistler waves observed by Solar Orbiter/RPW between 0.5 AU and 1 AU

M. Kretzschmar et al.

Summary: The study aims to detect and characterize electromagnetic waves that can modify the electron distribution functions, with a focus on whistler waves. Through analysis of field fluctuations observed by Solar Orbiter spacecraft, it was found that a majority of waves are right-handed circularly polarized quasi-parallel whistler waves, with their occurrence rate doubling from 1 AU to 0.5 AU. These results are consistent with the regulation of heat flux by whistler heat flux instability.

Ambipolar Electric Field and Potential in the Solar Wind Estimated from Electron Velocity Distribution Functions

Laura Bercic et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electrostatic contribution to solar wind dynamics using data from the Parker Solar Probe, estimating the ambipolar electric field and potential. The analysis reveals a suprathermal electron deficit in the near-Sun solar wind, corresponding to a predicted cutoff energy in collisionless exospheric models. The findings are consistent with theoretical expectations and suggest a decrease in electrostatic acceleration with radial distance.

On the Role of Solar Wind Expansion as a Source of Whistler Waves: Scattering of Suprathermal Electrons and Heat Flux Regulation in the Inner Heliosphere

A. Micera et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of solar wind expansion in generating whistler waves, showing that expansion triggers whistler heat flux instabilities and affects electron distributions and temperature through wave-particle interaction processes. The research also provides a theoretical basis for explaining observations of different types of whistler waves in the solar wind.

Electron Heat Flux Instabilities in the Inner Heliosphere: Radial Distribution and Implication on the Evolution of the Electron Velocity Distribution Function

Heyu Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electron heat flux instability in the inner heliosphere, finding that both electron acoustic waves and oblique whistler waves are unstable under conditions of large relative drift speed. It is proposed that electron heat flux can effectively drive oblique whistler waves in anisotropic electron velocity distribution. Additionally, lower-hybrid waves are observed to be stronger than oblique Alfven waves in the solar atmosphere.

Stability of superthermal strahl electrons in the solar wind

J. M. Schroeder et al.

Summary: This study presents a kinetic stability analysis of the solar wind electron distribution, revealing instabilities in the core-strahl electron distribution at specific heliospheric distances induced by various modes. These instabilities are primarily driven by the relative drift between electron and ion cores.
