The MeerKAT Galaxy Cluster Legacy Survey I. Survey Overview and Highlights

K. Knowles et al.

Summary: MeerKAT, with its large number of antennas and high sensitivity, is a powerful instrument for wide-area surveys in astronomy. The MeerKAT Galaxy Cluster Legacy Survey provides detailed observations of 115 galaxy clusters, revealing information on their structures and surrounding environments. Initial results from the survey show insights into star formation rates and radio emission within galaxy clusters.

The Galactic center chimneys: the base of the multiphase outflow of the Milky Way

G. Ponti et al.

Summary: Multiwavelength observations indicate that the chimneys act as a channel connecting the continuous but intermittent activity at the GC with the Fermi bubbles. The prominent edges and shocks in the radio and mid-infrared bands suggest powerful recent outflows from the Milky Way's central parsecs. The data supports the presence of a vertical magnetic field and raises the possibility that the chimneys represent a relic of past and more powerful activity.

Primary beam effects of radio astronomy antennas - II. Modelling MeerKAT L-band beams

K. M. B. Asad et al.

Summary: After a decade of design and construction, South Africa's SKA-MID precursor MeerKAT has begun its science operations. To make full use of the widefield capability of the array, an accurate model of the primary beam of its antennas is essential. By using 'astro-holographic' observations and electromagnetic simulations, researchers have created sparse representations of the beams using principal components and Zernike polynomials. The model is more accurate for the diagonal elements of the beam Jones matrix and at lower frequencies.

A global view on star formation: The GLOSTAR Galactic plane survey II. Supernova remnants in the first quadrant of the Milky Way

R. Dokara et al.

Summary: Through the use of continuum images from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array GLObal view of the STAR formation in the Milky Way (GLOSTAR) survey, we have successfully identified 157 SNR candidates, with 80 being new. Polarization measurements show evidence of nonthermal emission from nine of these candidates, further highlighting the importance of higher resolution and sensitivity radio continuum data in identifying and confirming SNRs.

Sagittarius B1: A Patchwork of H ii Regions and Photodissociation Regions

Janet P. Simpson et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the H ii region Sgr B1 in the Galactic center and its surrounding photodissociation regions (PDRs), finding that Sgr B1 consists of multiple smaller H ii regions and associated PDRs, some of which are observed face-on and others edge-on. Estimates of densities and far-ultraviolet intensities in the PDRs were made using the PDR Toolbox. Modeling with Cloudy showed the possible appearances of edge-on PDRs and suggested that pressure equilibrium in the region may require a substantial contribution from turbulence or magnetic fields, in addition to the pressure from density differences between PDRs and electron densities estimated from [O iii] line ratios.

The black hole transient MAXI J1348-630: evolution of the compact and transient jets during its 2019/2020 outburst

F. Carotenuto et al.

Summary: The study presents a 14-month radio and X-ray monitoring campaign of the 2019/2020 outburst of the new black hole X-ray binary, MAXI J1348-630. The evolution of compact and transient jets were detected and tracked during the outburst, with the observation of multiple re-flare events and the launch of two single-sided ejecta with high proper motion. The characteristics of the ejecta, including inclination, speed, and expansion, provided insights into the environment surrounding the black hole, suggesting a possible location inside a low-density cavity in the interstellar medium.

A. Brunthaler et al.

Summary: The paper introduces the GLOSTAR survey, a new survey covering large parts of the northern Galactic plane with radio observations, providing for the first time a radio survey covering all angular scales down to 1.5 arcsecond. The observations included radio continuum in full polarization, as well as various spectral lines, conducted in compact and extended VLA configurations.

Pei-Ying Hsieh et al.

Summary: Utilizing the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, observations of CS line maps were conducted towards the circumnuclear disk and streamers of the Galactic center, revealing compact structures within the CS clouds. The study found that the CS clouds consist of a mixture of warm and cold gas states, with a stability analysis showing that a majority of the gas mass is tidally stable.
