Current status of space gravitational wave antenna DECIGO and B-DECIGO

Seiji Kawamura et al.

Summary: DECIGO is a future Japanese space mission aimed at detecting primordial gravitational waves and has other scientific objectives such as measuring the acceleration of the expansion of the Universe and predicting neutron star/black hole binary coalescences. DECIGO consists of four clusters of observatories placed in heliocentric orbit, with each cluster containing three spacecraft forming interferometers with a 1000 km arm length.

Population Properties of Compact Objects from the Second LIGO-Virgo Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: The study reveals unique characteristics of the merging binary black hole (BBH) population, including a specific primary mass spectrum and misaligned component spins leading to precession of the orbital plane. The research also estimates merger rates, indicating potential correlation between BBH rate and redshift but not exceeding the star formation rate. Additionally, recent exceptional events are examined in relation to population models, with GW190814 being identified as an outlier due to its low secondary mass.

High eccentricities and high masses characterize gravitational-wave captures in galactic nuclei as seen by Earth-based detectors

Laszlo Gondan et al.

Summary: This study takes into account the effects of dynamical friction, post-Newtonian corrections, and observational bias to determine the detected sources' parameter distributions of gravitational wave mergers from all galactic nuclei in the Universe. It was found that the total binary mass distribution of detected mergers is strongly tilted towards higher masses, and the eccentricity when first entering the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA band is remarkably high.

GWTC-2: Compact Binary Coalescences Observed by LIGO and Virgo during the First Half of the Third Observing Run

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This report presents 39 candidate gravitational-wave events detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo during the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between April 1, 2019 and October 1, 2019. The events include black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8 and events where the components cannot be unambiguously identified. The range of candidate event masses has expanded compared to previous catalogs, with the inclusion of binary systems with asymmetric mass ratios.

Hierarchical mergers of stellar-mass black holes and their gravitational-wave signatures

Davide Gerosa et al.

Summary: This article reviews theoretical findings, astrophysical modelling, and current gravitational-wave evidence of hierarchical stellar-mass black-hole mergers, highlighting the unique characteristics of hierarchically assembled black holes and the conditions astrophysical environments need to overcome to produce hierarchical mergers. Despite GW190521 being the most promising candidate to date, constraints from large population analyses are becoming increasingly powerful.

Stochastic gravitational wave background and eccentric stellar compact binaries

Yuetong Zhao et al.

Summary: The study estimated the gravitational wave background (GWB) formed by gravitational wave radiation from numerous cosmic stellar compact binaries, and found a possible turnover in the spectrum at low frequencies. Using simple models, it was determined that different detectors have varying capabilities in detecting the GWB over different observation periods.
