This study sheds light on the chemical complexity that can result from UV photolysis of CH3CN ice mixtures and highlights possible formation pathways for newly detected molecules in the ISM.

Mechanism of Indirect Photon-Induced Desorption at the Water Ice Surface

Summary: It has been shown in the study that electronic excitations near the surface of water ice can lead to the desorption of adsorbed molecules. Based on mass and isotopic dependence, along with the known increase in intrinsic desorption efficiency, it can be inferred that the desorption mechanism is induced by collisions between adsorbates and energetic H/D atoms produced by the photodissociation of water.
