An Atomic Spectral Survey of WASP-76b: Resolving Chemical Gradients and Asymmetries

Aurora Y. Kesseli et al.

Summary: In this study, we observed the nonuniformity of ultrahot Jupiter atmospheres using high-resolution transit transmission spectroscopy and discovered multiple atoms/ions that have not been reported before. By studying the asymmetries in the observed signals, we proposed different explanations and a new atmospheric model, which contribute to our understanding of atmospheric dynamics in highly irradiated planets.

No Umbrella Needed: Confronting the Hypothesis of Iron Rain on WASP-76b with Post-processed General Circulation Models

Arjun B. Savel et al.

Summary: By using double-gray general circulation models and ray-striking radiative transfer, researchers modeled the atmosphere of the ultrahot Jupiter WASP-76b to diagnose its high-resolution transmission spectrum, revealing the necessity of a physical mechanism to drive the asymmetry producing large Doppler blueshifts. They found that high-altitude, optically thick clouds composed of specific materials provided reasonable fits to the observations, and demonstrated the benefits of physical, self-consistent 3D simulations in modeling high-resolution spectra of exoplanet atmospheres.

Detection of OH in the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76b

R. Landman et al.

Summary: OH is detected in the atmosphere of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76b with a peak signal-to-noise ratio of 6.1. The study provides constraints on the planet properties and demonstrates that OH is readily observable in the transit spectra of ultra-hot Jupiters, offering insights into molecular dissociation processes in the atmospheres of such planets.

Summary: The study identified characteristics of TiO and Fe in the dayside emission spectrum of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-33b, with the detection of Fe showing higher significance compared to TiO. The model spectra require different temperature profiles to match the observations.

First Detection of Hydroxyl Radical Emission from an Exoplanet Atmosphere: High-dispersion Characterization of WASP-33b Using Subaru/IRD

Stevanus K. Nugroho et al.

Summary: The study reports the first detection of a hydroxyl radical (OH) emission signature in the planetary atmosphere outside the solar system, specifically in the dayside of WASP-33b. Using high-resolution near-infrared emission spectra, OH and H2O emission signatures were detected on the dayside atmosphere of ultra-hot Jupiters, providing insights into the composition and characteristics of their atmospheres.

Five carbon- and nitrogen-bearing species in a hot giant planet's atmosphere

Paolo Giacobbe et al.

Summary: Observations of hot Jupiter HD 209458b indicate the presence of various molecules in its atmosphere, including water, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, methane, ammonia, and acetylene. These findings suggest a carbon-rich chemistry with a higher carbon-to-oxygen ratio than the solar value, potentially related to planet formation and migration scenarios. This challenges the assumption of solar-like and oxygen-rich compositions in hot Jupiters.

Into the storm: diving into the winds of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76 b with HARPS and ESPRESSO

J. Seidel et al.

Summary: This study provides a clearer picture of atmospheric dynamics for ultra-hot Jupiters based on the example of WASP-76 b. Results suggest that WASP-76 b has an isothermal atmosphere, with uniform winds in the lower atmosphere and vertical winds in the upper atmosphere. The study highlights the importance of vertical winds in the intermediate atmosphere to explain the line broadening of the sodium doublet in this planet.

Decomposing the iron cross-correlation signal of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76b in transmission using 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer

Joost P. Wardenier et al.

Summary: In this study, the atmosphere of ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76b was simulated under various conditions using a global circulation model, showing that the cross-correlation signal is primarily driven by temperature structure, rotation, and dynamics. The experiments revealed that the precise distribution of iron across the atmosphere has minimal impact on the signal and can be explained by iron condensation or temperature asymmetry.

Confirmation of Asymmetric Iron Absorption in WASP-76b with HARPS

Aurora Y. Kesseli et al.

Summary: Hot Jupiters like WASP-76b have been found to exhibit asymmetric iron absorption features on their nightsides, representing the first observed chemical gradient on an exoplanet. By confirming this feature with archival HARPS data and showing that it can be detected on smaller telescopes through multiple transits, researchers can now make chemical comparisons between exoplanets and map condensation across a range of parameters for the first time.
