Adaptive Measurement of Change: A Novel Method to Reduce Respondent Burden and Detect Significant Individual-Level Change in Patient-Reported Outcome Measures

David J. Weiss et al.

Summary: The adaptive measurement of change (AMC) is an effective approach to identify significant change in the reported function of hospitalized patients, using multivariate computerized adaptive testing (CAT) and psychometric hypothesis tests. The AMC method reduces respondent burden and test duration for follow-up assessments.

Correlation and Crosswalks Between Patient-Reported Functional Outcomes and PROMIS Physical Function Among Medically Ill Patients

Elizabeth Marfeo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop scoring crosswalks between a new multidomain patient-reported outcome measure, the Functional Assessment in Acute Care (FAMCAT), and a Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement (PROMIS) measure of physical function, and examine correlations with existing legacy instruments. The results showed strong correlations between the FAMCAT Daily Activity scale and the PROMIS PF, indicating its usefulness in assessing functional abilities among patients on general medical services.

Identifying Clinically Relevant Functional Strata to Direct Mobility Preservation Among Patients Hospitalized With Medical Conditions

Elizabeth Marfeo et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to develop a system to interpret scores generated from the newly developed item response theory-based Functional Assessment in Acute Care Multidimensional Computerized Adaptive Test (FAMCAT). Meaningful cutpoints for each domain of FAMCAT were established using a data-informed, modified Delphi process. The resulting interpretation guide can be used to develop individualized mobility preservation programs and identify patients in need of higher levels of supervision based on their FAMCAT scores.

Linking Scores with Patient-Reported Health Outcome Instruments: A Validation Study and Comparison of Three Linking Methods

Benjamin D. Schalet et al.

Summary: This article discusses the use of linking and equating procedures to establish a relationship between the scores of two instruments. In recent years, health outcome researchers have applied linking techniques to patient-reported outcome data. The purposes of linking health outcomes include data harmonization, aggregation of summed score data, and score conversion in clinical settings.
