Effect of locking mode on mechanical properties and failure behavior of CFRP/Al electromagnetic riveted joint

Hao Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated three ways of joining CFRP and Al sheets using EMR, and studied the deformation characteristics, mechanical properties, and failure behavior of the joints in different locking modes. The results indicated that the locking mode and discharge energy significantly affected the performance of the joint, and each joint had its own characteristics, providing guidance for selecting the appropriate locking mode based on actual requirements.

Fatigue behaviors and mechanism-based life evaluation on SPR-bonded aluminum joint

Guanghan Wu et al.

Summary: The fatigue behaviors of hybrid joints, which combine cold-formed mechanical fastening with adhesive bonding, are not fully understood due to complex load transfer paths and interactions between the two joining techniques. This study investigated fatigue tests on different joint types and evaluated failure mechanisms through terminated fatigue tests and numerical analysis. It was found that periodic and asymmetric failure modes exist in SPR-bonded joints, where crack pinning and asymmetric failure affect crack growth in adhesive bonding and intensify damage on SPR joining. A mechanism-based fatigue life evaluation method was proposed and showed good correlations with experimental results under different loading conditions.

Study on surface characteristics and stochastic model of corroded steel in neutral salt spray environment

Min Xia et al.

Summary: An artificial accelerated corrosion test was conducted to study the surface morphology characteristic of corroded steel in a neutral salt spray environment. Results showed that the corrosion depth of steel surfaces generally follows a normal distribution, while the pit depth and aspect ratio follow a lognormal distribution. The parameters of the corroded steel surfaces changed with the degree of corrosion.

The effects of harsh aging environments on the properties of neat and MWCNT reinforced epoxy resins

Abdullah Aslan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different harsh aging environments on the properties of neat and MWCNT reinforced epoxy resins, showing that acidic environments led to increased water absorption and decreased strength. Surprisingly, the strength of specimens aged in NaCl solution environment increased by 29%, contrary to previous literature. Additionally, MWCNT reinforcement was found to adversely affect the strength of the epoxy resin.

Corrosion performance of hot-dip galvanized zinc-aluminum coated steel rebars in comparison to the conventional pure zinc coated rebars in concrete environment

Abdulaziz Al-Negheimish et al.

Summary: In this study, zinc was alloyed with aluminum to enhance the corrosion resistance of hot-dip galvanized coated steel rebars, with the 10%Al-90%Zn alloy providing the best results. The corrosion resistance performances of the coated rebars were evaluated using various test methods, and the 10AZ-coated rebar showed superior performance compared to the 100Z-coated rebar. Various techniques were employed to study the kinetics and corrosion mechanism of the coated rebars.

Corrosion behavior in aluminum/galvanized steel resistance spot welds and self-piercing riveting joints in salt spray environment

Bo Pan et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the corrosion behavior of aluminum alloy/galvanized steel joints fabricated by different methods exposed to salt-spray cycles, highlighting the impact of crevice on corrosion behavior and the difference in corrosion between RSW and SPR joints. The stable corrosion products of Al and Zn-Fe alloy, as well as additional observed corrosion products, were explained using Pourbaix diagrams, metastable corrosion products, and possible chemical reactions.
