An objective-based prioritization approach to support trophic complexity through ecological restoration species mixes

Emma Ladouceur et al.

Summary: Researchers developed a framework to optimize plant seed mixes based on prioritizing plant species attributes to support different ecological restoration objectives. They found that trophic relationships, ecosystem functions and services can be captured more efficiently through objective-based prioritization using the functional identity of plant species.

A Regional Assessment of Changes in Plant-Plant Interactions Along Topography Gradients in Tunisian Sebkhas

Ghassen Chaieb et al.

Summary: Facilitation among plants in dry ecosystems is crucial for diversity and ecosystem functioning and stability. However, the importance of facilitation in extremely stressful conditions is highly debated. This study found that shrubs decreased salinity and drought stresses for target species, but there was a collapse of facilitation along salinity gradients, particularly under increasing aridity. The three target species had different responses to neighbors, with the least stress-tolerant species being facilitated and the most stress-tolerant ones being negatively affected.

Too much of a good thing: Shrub benefactors are less important in higher diversity arid ecosystems

Christopher J. Lortie et al.

Summary: The study explored the complex interactions between local plant species richness and shrub facilitation intensity to maintain biodiversity in arid ecosystems. It was found that increasing local plant species richness shifted the interaction with shrubs from positive to negative, indicating that higher richness does not always enhance functions that maintain diversity in plant communities.

The Effects of Native Shrub, Fencing, and Acorn Size on the Emergence of Contrasting Co-Occurring Oak in Mediterranean Grazed Areas

Summary: The study suggests that Cytisus multiflorus plays a significant role in facilitating seedling emergence of Quercus ilex and Quercus pyrenaica in Mediterranean grazed areas. In these regions, the emergence of Q. ilex is higher than Q. pyrenaica, possibly indicating a shift towards more xeric climatic conditions.

Assessing the relative importance of nurse species on Mediterranean human-altered areas

Summary: One advantageous strategy for landscape restoration is the use of nurse plants, with a study showing that a Mediterranean endemic palm is the most important nurse species. This species can promote spatial associations with late-successional plant species and save additional resources.
