Flow characteristics of tangential leakage in a scroll compressor for automobile heat pump with CO2

SiYu Zheng et al.

Summary: The numerical investigation of the flow field of a scroll compressor working with CO2 revealed different characteristics of the tangential leakage flow in the suction and compression chambers. In the compression chamber, the mixing of the tangential leakage flow and mainstream induced passage vortex and secondary flows, with the secondary flow being the primary factor resulting in the occurrence of localized high temperature region.

Impact of micro-grooves in scroll wrap tips on the performance of a trans-critical CO2 scroll compressor

Siyu Zheng et al.

Summary: Radial leakage is considered a key factor limiting the aero-thermodynamic performance of scroll compressors. This study proposed a passive flow control approach using micro-grooves in the scroll wrap tip to reduce radial leakage, resulting in improved volumetric and isentropic efficiency. The geometric parameters of the micro-grooves directly affect the flow control performance, with increasing groove numbers and partitions effectively decreasing leakage, while leakage initially decreases and then increases with groove depth.
