Anion exchange and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction-assisted coating of BiVO4 with Bi2S3 to produce nanostructured photoanode for enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting

Sutripto Majumder et al.

Summary: The study focused on improving the current performance limit of BiVO4 as a photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting by fabricating a highly efficient BiVO4/Bi2S3 heterojunction using facial anion-exchange and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction methods. The research found that the SILAR-coated Bi2S3 on BiVO4 showed the highest photocurrent density, three times the value of pristine BiVO4, under 1 sun illumination, while the AE-deposited Bi2S3 resulted in a twofold increase in photocurrent density compared to uncoated BiVO4. Comparing the two methods, it was observed that the SILAR-grown Bi2S3 created an effective heterojunction with BiVO4, leading to efficient charge transfer and improved performance.

The significant role of the chemically bonded interfaces in BiVO4/ZnO heterostructures for photoelectrochemical water splitting

Jinglin Li et al.

Summary: Chemically bonded BiVO4/ZnO quantum dot heterostructures were fabricated using a simple solution dry-out method, forming chemically bonded interfaces (CBIs) that promote photoexcited electron transfer and serve as hole-blocking layers. The CBIs showed excellent performance in both UV and visible light regions, leading to significantly increased photocurrent density in BiVO4/ZnO QDs without a cocatalyst. Additionally, ethylene glycol was found to partially reduce Bi ions to elemental bismuth during the calcination process, contributing to improved water oxidation kinetics.
