Intermediate excited state suppression and upconversion enhancement of Er3+ ions by carbon-doping boosting photocarrier separation in bismuth oxychloride nanosheets

Jiajun Han et al.

Summary: This study introduces a carbon heterovalent doping strategy to enhance the luminescence efficiency of rare-earth ions doped upconversion nanomaterials by suppressing the intermediate excited states of Er3+ ions. The enhancement is achieved by strengthening the spontaneous polarization and inter electric field of bismuth oxychloride nanosheets through the replacement of C ions for Cl. The recombination rate of intermediate excited state electrons of Er3+ ions with the ground state is inhibited by the enhanced inter electric field, promoting energy reabsorption transition and enhancing the visible upconversion emission.

Facile synthesis of Co(II)-BiOCl@biochar nanosheets for photocatalytic degradation of p-nitrophenol under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation

Ting-ting Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, cobalt-doped and biochar-cocatalyst bismuth oxychloride (Co(II)-BiOCl@biochar) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized via hydrothermal method, showing high efficiency for the photodegradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) illumination and good stability over multiple cycles. The addition of Co2+ and biochar significantly enhanced the photocatalytic performance of the catalysts, leading to narrow band gap, wide wavelength of the light source, effective separation of e-/h+ pairs, and high photocatalytic activity. The formation of various active species like .OH, h+, e-, .O2-, and eaq- was responsible for the improved performance, as confirmed by radical-trapping experiments.

Investigating the effect of Nd3+ dopant and the formation of g-C3N4/BiOI heterostructure on the microstructural, optical and photoelectrocatalytic properties of g-C3N4

P. Velusamy et al.

Summary: A two-step thermal poly-condensation and hydrothermal method was used to prepare noble metal-free nano-heterostructure of neodymium (Nd)-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI). The synthesised heterostructure exhibits high electron-hole separation and low charge recombination rate, highlighting the effectiveness of Nd doping and heterojunction formation. Nd doping enhances visible light absorption of g-C3N4, leading to improved photoelectrochemical properties. Introducing Nd dopant into g-C3N4 is shown to be an effective and controllable approach to enhance the PEC water splitting performance.
