Influence of high pressure on the structure, hardness and brittle-to-ductile transition of NbSi2 ceramics

D. L. Pu et al.

Summary: This study applies first-principles calculations to investigate the impact of pressure on the properties of NbSi2. It is found that increasing pressure results in higher hardness and elastic modulus of NbSi2, as well as induces a transition from brittleness to ductility in different phases. The enhancement of mechanical properties is attributed to the increased electronic hybridization between Nb and Si under pressure, demonstrated by chemical bonding interactions.

Oxidation protection of tungsten alloys for nuclear fusion applications: A comprehensive review

Tao Fu et al.

Summary: Tungsten, as the most prominent plasma-oriented material in nuclear fusion reactors, suffers from poor oxidation resistance at high temperatures. Scholars have suggested that self-passivating tungsten alloy and surface protection technology are effective ways to address this issue. Studies on various alloys and coatings for oxidation protection of tungsten have been reviewed, with analysis on their microstructure, oxidation behavior, and failure mechanism. Future development direction and trend in oxidation protection of W-based materials are also discussed.

Structural, electronic, mechanical and thermodynamic properties of Cr-Si binary silicides from first-principles investigations

Y. Pan et al.

Summary: Cr-Si binary silicides are promising advanced functional materials widely used in semiconductors, thermoelectric, and high temperature industries. Structural, mechanical, electronic, and thermodynamic properties of Cr-Si silicides were studied using first-principles. A novel Cr2Si orthorhombic structure was predicted and different silicides showed varying properties, with Cr3Si having larger moduli but Cr2Si exhibiting better ductility and plasticity. These findings provide insight into the comprehensive properties of Cr-Si silicides and guide future improvements in their performance.

Effects of Cr2O3 Content on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al2O3 Matrix Composites

Kunkun Cui et al.

Summary: Al2O3-Cr2O3 refractories are solid solutions that can resist slag erosion effectively. The introduction of Cr2O3 in the composite material leads to decreased compactness and mechanical properties, as well as reduced thermal shock resistance. A Cr2O3 content of 20-30% in the composite refractory can meet the requirements for smelting reduction iron making kiln lining.

Formation of MoSi2 and Si/MoSi2 coatings on TZM (Mo-0.5Ti-0.1Zr-0.02C) alloy by hot dip silicon-plating method

Yingyi Zhang et al.

Summary: MoSi2 and Si-MoSi2 composite coatings with fine MoSi2 grain size and high surface silicon concentration were successfully deposited on TZM alloy using a hot dip silicon-plating method. The gradient structure of the coatings, including MoSi2 layer, Mo5Si3C layer, and Si-MoSi2 layer, contributes to reducing stress mutation and crack propagation. SEM and CLSM results demonstrate that a significant portion of MoSi2 grains are covered by silicon layer, leading to very low coating surface roughness when deposition time exceeds 10 minutes.

High-throughput synthesis of oxidation-resistant Nb-Si based alloy thin film by magnetron co-sputtering

Chen Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a high-throughput method was applied to study the oxidation behavior of Nb-Si based alloy using composition spread alloy film as combinatorial libraries. By depositing Nb-Si based alloy film with extended composition gradients through (multi)magnetron co-sputtering, the film composed of amorphous phase was obtained. Different oxide scales were efficiently defined across the entire composition space by combinatorial libraries after oxidation at 1250 degrees C for 10 min and 20 min.

Evolution of surface morphology, roughness and texture of tungsten disilicide coatings on tungsten substrate

Yingyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The hot dip silicon-plating method is a promising surface coating technology, but the correlation between process parameters and properties of WSi2 coatings is not entirely clear. SEM, TEM, AFM, and EBSD methods were used to study the evolution behavior of surface and interface morphologies, roughness, and texture of tungsten disilicide coatings. The results showed that the surface morphologies and roughness were influenced by deposition time, and the orientation of WSi2 grains was biased towards (100) and (110) crystal planes due to the vigorous bombardment of high-energy Si ions.

Summary: Al2O3-Cr2O3 composites with CaO addition exhibit improved mechanical properties, sintering properties, and thermal shock resistance. The presence of CaO enhances the compactness of the composites and helps fill the gaps between solid solutions, resulting in reduced porosity. Excessive CaO addition, however, deteriorates the mechanical properties by increasing porosity.
