Forecasting emergency department hourly occupancy using time series analysis

Qian Cheng et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel predictive model for emergency department hourly occupancy using SARIMAX model with external regressors, providing up to 4-hour ahead predictions. By including external regressors of current ED occupancy, average department-wide ESI, and ED boarding total, the 24-SARIMAX model outperformed other forecasting methods in predicting ED occupancy.

Feature selection with multi-objective genetic algorithm based on a hybrid filter and the symmetrical complementary coefficient

Rui Zhang et al.

Summary: HSMOGA is a novel feature selection algorithm that introduces a hybrid filter, Symmetrical Complementary Coefficient, and a new method to limit feature subset size. It uses a Pareto-based ranking function to solve multi-objective problems and precalculates knowledge using a step called knowledge reserve, leading to faster convergence of solutions. Experimental results show that HSMOGA outperforms other nine feature selection algorithms in terms of performance metrics such as kappa coefficient, accuracy, and G-mean.

Predicting waiting time to treatment for emergency department patients

Anton Pak et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant improvement in accurate waiting time predictions for low acuity ED patients through the use of machine learning algorithms and queueing and service flow variables. Additionally, quantile regression helps reduce the number of patients with large underpredicted waiting times.
