Effects of urban dust emissions on fine and coarse PM levels and composition

Stylianos Kakavas et al.

Summary: The study reveals a significant underprediction of PM10 levels in both urban and rural areas in Europe, mainly due to an underestimation of urban dust. By increasing the urban dust emissions by a factor of ten, significant improvements in PM10 predictions are observed. The concentrations of nitrate, ammonium, and sulfate also show changes as a result of the higher levels of urban dust emissions.

Bioaccessibility, source impact and probabilistic health risk of the toxic metals in PM2.5 based on lung fluids test and Monte Carlo simulations

Jianwei Liu et al.

Summary: The bioaccessibility of soluble toxic metals in PM2.5 was determined using simulated lung fluids, showing higher bioaccessibility in ALF compared to GS, especially for Cd and Pb. Positive matrix factorization identified five TM sources, revealing a significant correlation between resuspended dust and coal combustion with the bioaccessibility of some TMs. Monte Carlo simulations estimated noncancer and cancer risks of soluble TMs, indicating potential risks for As and most TMs due to their high probability of exceeding safety thresholds.

Mobility of Mn and other trace elements in Mn-rich mine tailings and adjacent creek at Kanye, southeast Botswana

O. Sracek et al.

Summary: The study in Kanye, southeast Botswana, found that mine tailings rich in Mn have contaminated an adjacent creek, posing potential environmental risks during rainy periods. Different trace elements such as As, Mn, and Fe exhibit varying binding and mobility characteristics, with potential for groundwater and environmental contamination.

Understanding how methodological aspects affect the release of trace metal(loid)s from urban dust in inhalation bioaccessibility tests

A. Exposito et al.

Summary: The type and composition of surrogate biological fluids, as well as the liquid to solid ratio, significantly affect the bioaccessibility of metal(loid)s in ambient particulate matter. Adding glycine to Gamble's solution can greatly increase bioaccessibility, while ALF fluid generally exhibits the highest bioaccessibility at a liquid to solid ratio of 5000. The bioaccessibility of metal(loid)s in Gamble's fluid increases logarithmically with increasing liquid to solid ratio, while it remains constant in ALF and gastric fluid, indicating different mechanisms of solubility and availability control.

The impact of increased flooding occurrence on the mobility of potentially toxic elements in floodplain soil - A review

Jessica Ponting et al.

Summary: Flooding events are increasing the mobilization of potential toxic elements in floodplain soils. Five key processes interact to affect the mobility of these elements, making it difficult to predict the impact. Factors such as microbial mediation, temperature dependence, and soil mineralogy play a role in influencing the mobility of toxic elements in floodplain soils.

Geochemical changes of Mn in contaminated agricultural soils nearby historical mine tailings: Insights from XAS, XRD and, SEP

Arturo Morales-Perez et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant changes in the chemical forms of manganese in agricultural soils impacted by historical mine tailings, with high concentrations of soluble and exchangeable manganese indicating potential toxicity to organisms. X-ray Diffraction did not identify manganese-bearing mineral phases, suggesting manganese was predominantly present in low-crystalline forms.
