Analyses on CH4 and CO2 hydrate formation to define the optimal pressure for CO2 injection to maximize the replacement efficiency into natural gas hydrate in presence of a silica-based natural porous medium, via depressurization techniques

Alberto Maria Gambelli

Summary: This study demonstrated that conducting CO2 hydrate formation experiments starting at 40 bar pressure is the most effective solution, as it allows for a shorter formation time and reduces the required pressure drop. The more effective kinetic of the process and the negligible risk of methane hydrate re-formation make the 40 bar CO2 injection into the reservoir the best solution to optimize methane recovery, carbon dioxide storage, and seafloor deformations.

High resolution MRI studies of CO2 hydrate formation and dissociation near the gas-water interface

Yuechao Zhao et al.

Summary: Gas hydrates are considered promising for gas storage, energy transportation, and seawater desalination. Using MRI, researchers were able to non-invasively image the formation of opaque hydrates from CO2 and water in a cylindrical vessel at low temperature and high pressure. They observed dense hydrate layers forming consistently at the gas-water interface, porous hydrate layers above it, and complex dendritic formations in the water phase below.

Analytical study of CO2-CH4 exchange in hydrate at high rates of carbon dioxide injection into a reservoir saturated with methane hydrate and gaseous methane

G. G. Tsypkin

Summary: The study investigates the mechanism of converting methane hydrate into carbon dioxide hydrate by injecting gaseous carbon dioxide into a reservoir, and develops a mathematical model describing the replacement reaction process. Various reaction regimes and critical parameters for the conversion of CH4 hydrate to CO2 hydrate are explored.

Molecular mechanisms by which tetrahydrofuran affects CO2 hydrate Growth: Implications for carbon storage

Anh Phan et al.

Summary: Gas hydrates have recently shown potential applications for greenhouse gas capture and storage. This study investigates the impact of tetrahydrofuran (THF) on the kinetics of CO2 hydrate growth/dissociation and storage capacity. The simulations confirm that THF reduces CO2 storage capacity due to its preferred occupancy in hydrate cages.

Effect of promoters on CO2 hydrate formation: thermodynamic assessment and microscale Raman spectroscopy/hydrate crystal morphology characterization analysis

Yan Li et al.

Summary: The utilization of CO2 in gas hydrates production has gained interest due to its potential to increase methane recovery rates and store the greenhouse gas in a solid form. However, high pressures and low temperatures are required for CO2 hydrates production, along with elevated energy costs, which can be mitigated using chemical promoters. This research focuses on the molecular and crystalline properties of CO2 hydrates formed with THF and TBAB, showing that THF extends the temperature range for stable hydrate presence and has an optimal promoting concentration of 4.22 mol%.

Memory effect of CO2-hydrate formation in porous media

Zhiang Wen et al.

Summary: Monitoring the formation process of CO2 hydrate in sandstone cores revealed a memory effect, with secondary synthesis showing significantly higher rates and saturation levels compared to primary synthesis. This memory effect is attributed to changes in water molecular structure and the different pore occupation models during primary and secondary synthesis.

Hydrate-based separation of the CO2 + H2 mixtures. Phase equilibria with isopropanol aqueous solutions and hydrogen solubility in CO2 hydrate

Sergey Skiba et al.

Summary: Gas hydrate technology shows promise for gas mixture separation due to its ability to selectively bind one component into a hydrate state. However, determining the composition of mixed hydrates is challenging, especially with the presence of small molecules like hydrogen. This study experimentally determined the solubility of hydrogen in carbon dioxide hydrate and investigated the equilibrium conditions of hydrates in various systems with different hydrogen concentrations.
