Revelation of Fe(V)/Fe(IV) Involvement in the Fe(VI)-ABTS System: Kinetic Modeling and Product Analysis

Cong Luo et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the reaction kinetics of Fe(VI) oxidation of ABTS and proposed a comprehensive kinetic model including interactions between high-valent iron species and ABTS. The study successfully determined the reactivity of Fe(V) to different substrates. Overall, the improved Fe(VI)-ABTS kinetic model provides a useful tool for quantitatively probing Fe(V)/Fe(IV) behaviors in Fe(VI) oxidation.

Enhanced Oxidation of Organic Contaminants by Iron(II)-Activated Periodate: The Significance of High-Valent Iron-Oxo Species

Yang Zong et al.

Summary: Potassium periodate (PI, KIO4) can be activated by Fe(II) under acidic conditions to rapidly remove organic contaminants, generating high-valent iron-oxo species Fe(IV) and avoiding the formation of harmful iodine species. Isotope labeling techniques and X-ray absorption spectroscopy provided insights into the reaction mechanism of Fe(II)/PI process, enhancing our understanding of the efficient removal of emerging contaminants.

Are Free Radicals the Primary Reactive Species in Co(II)-Mediated Activation of Peroxymonosulfate? New Evidence for the Role of the Co(II)-Peroxymonosulfate Complex

Hongchao Li et al.

Summary: Co(II) exhibits the highest reactivity for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in wastewater treatment, forming a Co(II)-PMS complex as the primary reactive species. Free radicals and Co(III) act as secondary reactive species, playing a minor role in the Co(II)/PMS process.

Insights into the oxidation of organic contaminants by Co(II) activated peracetic acid: The overlooked role of high-valent cobalt-oxo species

Banghai Liu et al.

Summary: The combination of Co(II) and PAA can generate Co(IV) under acidic conditions, with the oxidation mechanism being strongly influenced by solution pH. The presence of H2O2 competes with Co(IV) and reactive radicals, leading to a decline in catalytic performance. Co(IV) reacts readily with organic substances bearing electron-rich groups, reducing their biological toxicity.

Ubiquitous Production of Organosulfates during Treatment of Organic Contaminants with Sulfate Radicals

Jean Van Buren et al.

Summary: The oxidation of organic contaminants by sulfate radical (SO4-) is increasingly used for hazardous waste sites and industrial wastewater treatment, potentially producing organosulfates, some of which can be harmful. It has been shown that stable sulfate-containing products are formed during the treatment process, with some compounds exhibiting higher mobility in groundwater due to lower affinity for surfaces.
