Air-Stable and Reusable Cobalt Phosphide Nanoalloy Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural Derivatives

Hiroya Ishikawa et al.

Summary: In this study, a supported cobalt phosphide nanoalloy catalyst was developed for the selective hydrogenation of furfural derivatives, showing high efficiency and air stability without the need for H-2 pretreatment. Backdonation from Co d-electrons to the pi* orbital of furfural derivatives was found to play a key role in the highly efficient hydrogenation process.

Furfural hydrogenation, hydrodeoxygenation and etherification over MoO2 and MoO3: A combined experimental and theoretical study

Aleksa Kojcinovic et al.

Summary: The valorization of lignocellulosic biomass, specifically the catalytic hydrotreatment of hemicellulose-based furfural, has been studied for the production of value-added chemicals. A three-phase batch reactor was used for the hydrotreatment over various MoOx catalysts, resulting in isopropyl levulinate as the major product. The presence or absence of gaseous H-2 pressure did not contribute significantly to the global reaction rate or selectivity.

Surface kinetics and transport phenomena modelling for furfural hydrotreatment over Pd/C in isopropanol and tetrahydrofuran

Rok Sivec et al.

Summary: Extensive experimental and computational studies have been conducted on the hydrogenation, hydrodeoxygenation, oligomerisation, and etherification of hemicellulose-derived furfural over Pd/C catalyst. In-situ reduction of PdO surfaces led to the formation of predominately Pd(111), with tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol identified as the main product. Various parameters such as solvent, atmosphere, temperature, pressure, and stirring speed were varied, culminating in the development of a micro-kinetic model to explain the observed phenomena and contributions to surface coverages, TOF's, and global reaction rates.

Atom efficient PtCu bimetallic catalysts and ultra dilute alloys for the selective hydrogenation of furfural

Martin J. Taylor et al.

Summary: Bimetallic nanoparticles of Pt:Cu exhibit superior catalytic activity and high selectivity in the liquid-phase selective hydrogenation of furfural, while Ultra Dilute Alloy (UDA) formed by the galvanic replacement of Cu atoms with Pt atoms shows exceptionally high initial rates of hydrogenation under modest hydrogen pressures, surpassing the performance of monometallic Pt and other bimetallic catalyst compositions.

Converting coffee silverskin to value-added products by a slow pyrolysis-based biorefinery process

Cristina del Pozo et al.

Summary: This study aims to transform coffee silverskin (CSS) waste into value-added products through an integrated slow pyrolysis process, producing biochar as an organic pollutant adsorbent and liquid fraction for caffeine extraction. The pyrolysis process also generates gas for biomass drying, achieving zero waste in the coffee roasting industry and promoting green chemicals production in a biorefinery context.
