Propolis obtained in a clearing inside the Atlantic Forest in Ubatuba (Sao Paulo state, Brazil): essential oil and possible botanical origin

Caroline C. Fernandes-Silva et al.

Summary: Propolis, a honey bee product, has been found to protect beehives against infections and boost their immunity. A study in southeast Brazil placed Africanized honey bee colonies in the Atlantic Forest to obtain propolis containing resin from local plants, revealing that species of Piperaceae may be the likely origin of propolis.

Artepillin C as an outstanding phenolic compound of Brazilian green propolis for disease treatment: A review on pharmacological aspects

Fernando Pereira Beserra et al.

Summary: Propolis is a viscous resin produced by bees, consisting of various bioactive substances with its chemical composition depending on factors such as plant sources and geographic origin. Baccharis dracunculifolia is an important botanical source of propolis, with one of its main bioactive constituents being Artepillin C. Artepillin C has multiple pharmacological effects, including gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antitumor properties.

A validated HPLC-UV method for the analysis of phenolic compounds in Brazilian red propolis and Dalbergia ecastaphyllum

Jennyfer A. Aldana-Mejia et al.

Summary: A reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography analytical method was developed for the detection and quantification of nine red propolis chemical markers in Brazilian red propolis extracts and D. ecastaphyllum. The method showed good detection response, linearity, precision, and robustness, making it reliable for quality control. Chemical markers were found in D. ecastaphyllum stems at lower concentrations, and seasonal analysis of Brazilian red propolis showed higher phenolic compound concentration during rainy periods.

Brazilian southeast brown propolis: gas chromatography method development for its volatile oil analysis, its antimicrobial and leishmanicidal activities evaluation

Victor Pena Ribeiro et al.

Summary: An analytical method was developed and validated to quantify volatile compounds in Brazilian brown propolis and evaluate their biological activities. The volatile fraction of propolis showed significant leishmanicidal and bactericidal activities, indicating its potential medicinal value. The analytical method can be a useful tool for quality control of propolis materials.
